Actually, I'm in line with Mary. Parnell comes across so well, what's not to like? I'll be looking you up, Parnell. Hell, can you sign one for me?

Damn funny. Very early days for me. Signed a few but only for people who know me. Which feels a little weird. It normally goes like this...

-Will you sign it for me?

-Are you sure?

-Yes, it'll be worth something when you're famous.

-Chances of being famous are not good.

-Can you sign it anyway?

-OK. But we know each other and it feels a bit strange.

Agreed, Benjamin. If nothing else, I stop and say hello, ask questions, and offer to buy them a cuppa coffee or tea. Personally, I would not be sitting there looking lonely, though: I'd be up talking, dancing on the table, whatever it took to walk away from the signing saying, uh-huh, I sold one damn book so it was worth my time. By the way, are these signings an IRS writeoff?

I laughed out loud when I saw Parnell sitting next to Mary Higgins Clark, but I'm sure this is not intended to be funny. The humor conveys a factual, true, and depressing message. However, I will say this: I love Parnell Hall's onscreen persona in this video. I'm going to go buy Hitman right now.

I always feel bad when I see lonesome authors in bookstores. And I always keep walking. I am damning myself to writer hell.

Very funny - and pretty much what I always suspected so I've never bothered to ask a bookshop to let me sign. And being that despised creature, a mid-lister, I figured the answer would probably be no, anyway! :-)

Too funny. This confirms my suspicion that book signings are generally a form of cosmic punishment for writers, no matter what their stature. If you're an unknown, nobody shows up. If you're famous, everybody freaking shows up. Hard to say which is worse.
