Profile Information

Hometown:
Chicago
About Me:
When I'm not writing a new novel or researching the next, I earn a buck as an award-winning creative director for a Chicago ad agency.

A life-long Chicago-area resident, I'm a graduate of the University of Illinois-Chicago, with a degree in Communications and Theatre. And since the Theatre part was never really his thing, I decided to focus on the Communications.

Upon entering the field of advertising, I found that I was extremely good at convincing people to buy things they really didn’t need. Still, while I enjoyed advertising, he knew something was missing.

And after devouring novels from the likes of Eugene Izzi, Ed McBain and Andrew Vacchs to name a few, I realized that my true calling was to be a novelist.

Yes…I thought…I will write books and take the literary world by storm!

The literary world, however, had other plans. Plans, it seemed, geared toward keeping me querying agents and publishers for ages until my first novel, Another Lost Angel, was purchased and published in May, 2006, by Thomson Gale/Five Star.

I currently reside in the western suburbs of Chicago, with my wife, three daughters and a black lab named Jake.

Steven B. Mandel's Blog

my first blog

Wow, I get to blog.

Huh.

Never done it before. Heard about it. Thought about doing it when I set up my website last year. But decided against it. I'm not vain enough to think that anybody really cares about my deepest thoughts and radical opinions.

At best, I'd probably just piss somebody off.

So I left the blogging to those of far greater intelligence who really have something to say.

Good enough.

But then comes Crimespace. And they make blogging…

Hey Steve,
Thanks for the invite. I share your ambivalence about blogging, but it's weird, because in person there's no shutting me up...
Talk to you later.

Hi Steve, like you I'm a virgin blogger. I also did Communications in the year 'yonks' and finished up writing speeches for Politicians. From there it was only a sidestep into creative writing. Catch up with you later. B

Hi, Steven, Anyone who loves Casablanca can't be all bad...I'm Brit, living in France, eight thrillers out of print and forgotten, working on two right now - one a translation of an agent's reject - while trying to make a few cents writing and editing for an English-language mag here in Brittany. Be good to hear from you. Best, David

Thanks for the invite to join your circle of friends. We have some favorite authors and favorite movies in common. Mr. Smith goes to Washington is high on my list, as is Casablanca. The idealist in me watches Mr. Smith before every national election and hopes for better. :-)

Hi, I, too am an Ed McBain fan. Love Chicago, as well--couldn't live there, though--too cold! But it is a great city. Thanks for the invitation.
