Profile Information

Hometown:
Wellington, New Zealand
About Me:
I was shown the value of reading by my mother when I was a small boy. I've worked as a hairdresser, dive master, soldier, graphic designer, boom operator for TV & films, photographer and other bits and bobs. I obviously get bored easily so need new stimuli. Actually learning the electric guitar is my latest passion, I'm obsessed with it. I have 3 fantastic children who are all now wonderful adults that I'm so fortunate to have raised.
Recently I have opened The Barbershop in Wellington.

Books And Authors I Like:
Tom Cain, John Sandford, Michael Connelly, John Conelly, Lee Child, James Patterson, Nelson Demille, David Baldacci, Agatha Christie, Barry Eisler, Ian Fleming, Ken Follet, Frederick Forsyth, John Grisham, Thomas Harris, Jack Higgens, Robert Ludlam, Alistair MacLean, David Morrell, Dorothy L Sayers, Harlen Coben, Robert Crais, Daniel Silva, Jeffery Deaver, Kyle Mills, Tolkien, JK Rowling's & lots more.
Movies And TV Shows I Like:
Deadwood {the best piece of TV writing and production ever}, Lovejoy, The Prisoner { that bubble is still spooky}, The Avengers {oringinal}, NCIS, NYPD Blue, Flight of the Concords, The LOTR movies, Harry Potter franchise, James Bond Movies- the new one was superb, History of Violence, Dexter, The Unforgiven, Saving Private Ryan, HMMMmmm lots really, I've been a terrible TV addict most my life, but find I loose interest now as the story lines seem to be aimed at the more stupid of us, i.e "Prison Break" there is a big difference between camp and just dumb. Seriously if you want to see quality watch Deadwood, it is a lesson in the making of great drama. I've read quite a few scripts and if the writings not good there isn't much hope for the rest of the production.

Owing to my own f*ckwittedness, I left the following reply, intended for you, on my page instead yesterday. So ...

Jason Statham is what you might call the 'you want ... you settle for ... you get" option. But my feeling is that the only way this film gets made is with a big budget, as the launchpad for a franchise. That's what one super A-list director with a mega action trilogy behind him (hint, hint!) wanted to do, till his studio's top brass got scared off by the Diana angle .. and it's what another major studio were interested in doing until Paramount came in for it, with a contract that entitles them to make sequels from now to the crack of doom. But since Hollywood is dead at the moment, because of the writers' strike, and unmade projects are piling up all over the place, I'd say the odds on it being made are getting ever-longer, unless it sells bucket-loads of books in the States. To which end, those reviews are, indeed, very gratifying ... And thanks for reading them!

Thanks too for the friend invite: delighted to accept ...

Ha-ha!! You saw Daniel Craig as Carver! So did I ... when I started work on the book in 2004, he was the physical model I had in mind when describing Carver (whose original first name was Daniel, as a nod to Craig). Then Craig got the Bond gig and I had to make a sudden readjustment!

As for Lee Child, I am a massive fan ... and I happen to know that one of his books was optioned for a spectacular deal by ... Tom Cruise. Love to see the elevator shoes Tom would wear to play THAT role!

Happily - or sadly, you might think! - I sold the movie rights to Accident Man when it was still in manuscript. So I got a deal ... but boy, was I (knowingly and with my full consent) bent over and made to be a bitch for it! On the other hand, if they buy the sequel, I get to renegotiate ... so we'll just see who does best in the end!

The truth about Hollywood is that, yes, they shaft yo if they can, but if they ever think you can do business for them, they certainly make it worth your while. So what the **** - go for the ride, is what I say!

Thanks. mate, that was a really kind message and very much appreciated. You may be interested, I delivered the sequel to my publishers on Monday morning. Here's hoping that goes down well, too!

Welcome. Is New Zealand as beautiful as I've always heard?
