<p>After chasing crooks for a number of years as a cop, I forget that some writers might break out in hives trying to figure out to write about the slimy side of life—interaction and investigation of the criminal world. Some writers’ life experiences might not have afforded them the opportunity to have a gangster in their face telling them what he’d like to do “wid yo mudder.” Or what it smells like to enter a home where the deceased died days ago.</p>
</div>
<div>Maybe aspiring crime writers wonder what it’s like to face an antagonistic defense attorney in open court. Or how they’d weather the withering attack from an attorney trying to expose their whole life to the world so the defense can shift attention away from their law-breaking client.</div>

As I prepared to interview our guest—international bestselling novelist Vincent Zandri—I could not help but make comparisons between these two men. Both men traveled extensively in Europe, loved to write, spent an awful lot of time in cafes and bars, and enjoyed the outdoors.</p>
<p></p>
</div>
<div><p>There are differences. Hemingway and Vincent became freelance journalists, but I am sure Papa never dabbled as a punk rock band member or studied the world’s first wind turbine-powered skyscraper in Bahrain. To be fair, these things did not exist when Hemingway was earning a couple of Pulitzers for literature, but I doubt he’d have moved in that direction if they did.</p>
</div>
<div><p>In many ways, though, Vincent seems to have followed the Hemingway template for living. He regularly crisscrosses the Atlantic, spending a part of the year in New York City and other parts in Italy and elsewhere. He has been able to choose a lifestyle that allows him to wander, gathering great material for his novels while making a living.</p>
<p></p>
</div>
<div><p><b>Mark: Thanks for joining us today, Vincent. In one paragraph, how would you characterize Vincent Zandri, the novelist, for our readers?</b></p>
<p><b><br/></b></p>
</div>
<div><p><b>Vincent: </b>Well that’s a tough one. First and foremost, I’m a hard worker. You have to be in this business. Maybe to the point of obsession. But I’m also still learning. I suppose I will always be learning as a writer. This is a solitary existence and I live in my mind a lot more than the average man or woman. But I try and balance the cerebral life of the writer with the physical, making sure to spend as much time away from the typewriter as it were, as I do in front of it. After all I wouldn’t have anything to write about if I stayed put all the time. Thus the frequent flier miles. <a href="http://hookembookem.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">(Click here to read entire interview).</a></p>

She was a walking advertisement for the Republicans and the Democrats, water softeners and water savers, tree huggers and tree cutters. Everyone had their stuff out for the taking—and she took. <div>As I write this novel, my research keeps taking me down some very strange avenues of science, places at first glance that seem unbelievable. For example, terrorist—aided by recent developments in technology—might be able to carry weapons of mass destruction small enough to hide inside a suitcase. Surveillance capabilities that track and record a person’s life in minute detail using technology being developed right now. Technology so minuscule that the human eye may never detect it.</div>

John M. Wills is a retired FBI agent and former Chicago police officer with military experience. He is also a writer—a subject John shares with us today. In short, he writes from experience. Mystery writers: Tuck away information about this guy as you slog your way through another crime mystery manuscript.You may need his help someday to make your cop character emerge as more than a comic-strip figure, or need a law enforcement scene to read like the real thing.</i></div>
<div>I’m a writer. I finally feel comfortable saying that in response to people who ask me what I do. It wasn’t always that way, and I would venture to say that many of us who write may be reluctant to describe ourselves as such. Why? My sense is that there is no clear definition of a writer, no bright line of delineation that marks the point when one may claim the title of writer.</div>
<div>If you’re expecting me to make clear the ambiguities as to when one becomes a writer, let me disabuse you of that notion immediately. I don’t know the answer. I do know that there are many questions from not only ourselves, but from others, as to what makes someone a writer. Is it when one is paid for a particular work? Or is it perhaps, when one becomes published, regardless of whether compensation has been received? Again, I don’t know. <a target="_blank" href="http://hookembookem.blogspot.com/">(Clear here for link to Hook'em and Book'em article)</a></div>Revenge: A Travis Mays Novel released as eBooktag:crimespace.ning.com,2011-02-14:537324:BlogPost:2714282011-02-14T16:58:24.000ZMark Younghttps://crimespace.ning.com/profile/MarkYoung

<p>"...Ex-cop Travis Mays starts a new life and a new career, teaching criminology at the university and building a cabin in the idyllic Idaho Mountains. He hires a beautiful river guide, Jessie White Eagle from the Nez Perce tribe, to guide him safely through raging whitewater, only to find that this trip changes everything-for Travis, for Jessie, and for those they hold dear. In the shadows lurks a man-calling himself Creasy-driven to make sure Travis pay for past sins. <br/><br/>This fast-paced thriller takes readers on a wild ride down Idaho's whitewater rivers, along the historic Lolo Trails once tread by the Nez Perce nation, and onto the city streets of California. Tighten your helmet. This ride never stops until the last shot is fired and the final body falls."</p>Chapter 1: A Novelist's Journey To Self-Publicationtag:crimespace.ning.com,2011-02-03:537324:BlogPost:2668472011-02-03T16:30:00.000ZMark Younghttps://crimespace.ning.com/profile/MarkYoung
