His oldest brother is in a maximum security prison, his middle brother is becoming increasingly fundamentalist, and his younger brother Rafi is on trial for a murder he swears he didn't commit. John has no reason to disbelieve Rafi but there are things going on in the family that he just doesn't understand. Why has his brother taken control of the family away from their father? Are the police really trying to set up Rafi? And what is the compelling evidence they say will put him away? John sets out to prove Rafi's innocence in the face of his predatory older brothers and some Lebanese-hating cops.

Bec Ralston is a good detective who doesn't know why she's been ordered to attend Rafi's trial. She was previously thrown off the investigation for voicing the opinion that Rafi might be innocent. As the court case goes badly wrong, she finds herself torn between her loyalty to the senior police she respects and the truth.

What is the secret to good crime writing? No one better to ask than a group of Australia's leading crime writers. Their conclusions are fascinating, provocative, often surprising, and they are all drawn from the hard school of personal experience. What pieces of advice do the writers have in common? That there is no substitute for hard work! One tells us there is no such thing as writer's block - "just do it" is a common theme. There is a fun part though: research. The writers could not vary more in their research and the way they approach it; from Shane Maloney's near-death experience in a freezer to Leigh Redhead's adventures as a stripper, Barry Maitland's endless walks through the streets of London to Gabrielle Lord's night out at a Gangster and Molls party, the search for ideas and atmosphere is never done and never dull. These writers also read voraciously, and they all give us their five 'must reads' - it's interesting how much they coincide. As do their Rules for Writing. All in all a treasure trove for all fans of crime fiction, be they aspiring writers or simply want to get to know their favourite writers better.

Full Review
Review - Dark Horse, Honey Browntag:crimespace.ning.com,2013-05-07:537324:BlogPost:3719272013-05-07T01:04:52.000ZKaren from AustCrimehttps://crimespace.ning.com/profile/austcrimefiction

Climate change is causing havoc in coastal areas and the world is in economic and ecological crisis. World leaders gather at a billion-dollar conference centre in Dubai, determined to make the decisions necessary to bring society back from the brink.

Explosives are smuggled into the centre. Doctor Ali Khalid Abukar, a former humanitarian worker pushed into extremism, holds the trigger. He and his 'colleagues' give selected governments seven days to comply with a series of demands or the centre will be obliterated. Certain heads of state are branded 'war criminals', and singled out for trial and execution, one by one.

Australian-born intelligence officer Marika Hartmann parachutes into Somalia in an attempt to track down Dr Abukar's wife, Sufia, who may hold the key to disarming the terrorists. An ambitious warlord, however, stands in her way at every turn. British diplomat Isabella Thompson, forced to betray her country after the kidnap of her two daughters, helps the extremists hijack of the conference centre. She faces charges of treason unless she can redeem herself. Her airline pilot husband, Simon, embarks on a dangerous quest to rescue the girls.

For all the characters, it's a race against the clock as they hurtle towards the seven-day deadline set by the terrorists and certain death for all the hostages in Dubai.

Full Review
Review - Mad Men, Bad Girls & The Guerrilla Knitters Institute, Maggie Grofftag:crimespace.ning.com,2013-04-27:537324:BlogPost:3712602013-04-27T05:19:49.000ZKaren from AustCrimehttps://crimespace.ning.com/profile/austcrimefiction

She sets out to expose the cult's lunatic beliefs and bizarre practices, but when she learns the identity of a recent recruit, her quest becomes personal. And dangerous.

The cult isn't the only case on Scout's agenda. Someone is cutting up girls' underwear at an exclusive school and Scout agrees to look into it. And the sinister secret behind the vandalism is not nice. Not at all.

But Scout has her secrets too. In the dead of night she sneaks out with an underground group of yarn bombers to decorate the locality with artworks. The next mission ticks all the right boxes – it's risky, difficult and extremely silly. However, not everyone is amused, and Scout has a sneaking suspicion that the local police sergeant, Rafe Kelly, is hot on her tail.

Full Review
Review - Out of the Silence, Wendy Jamestag:crimespace.ning.com,2013-04-26:537324:BlogPost:3712542013-04-26T13:12:41.000ZKaren from AustCrimehttps://crimespace.ning.com/profile/austcrimefiction

Title: OUT OF THE SILENCE
Author: Wendy James
ISBN: B00BMFEUPS
Year of Publication: 2013
Publisher: Momentum Books
Location: Melbourne

Book Synopsis

I call his name – only quietly, but he hears me as I knew he would, and wants me as he always does. And we come together – right there in the darkness. And even though there is no way to be certain of any other thing in the world, I am certain that I would risk anything to keep what is between the two of us. For love, I would risk anything, lose everything.

Out of the Silence is a stunning debut novel about three Australian women from very different worlds: Maggie Heffernan, a spirited working-class country girl; Elizabeth Hamilton, whose own disappointment in love has served only to strengthen her humanity; and Vida Goldstein, a charismatic suffragist from Melbourne and the first woman to stand for Parliament in Australia.

When Maggie’s life descends into darkness after a terrible betrayal, the three women’s lives collide. Around this tragedy Wendy James has constructed a masterfully drawn and gripping fiction. Based on a true story, it unfolds at the dawn of the twentieth century against the compelling backdrop of the women’s suffrage movement and a world on the brink of enormous change.

The novel powerfully evokes the plight of women in the early 1900s – not least their limited options, whatever their class and education. However, at its heart this is a story of love – of love gone wrong; of its compromises and disappointments; but ultimately of its extraordinary transformative power.

Full Review
Review - Red Dirt Talking, Jacqueline Wrighttag:crimespace.ning.com,2013-04-26:537324:BlogPost:3710302013-04-26T06:49:20.000ZKaren from AustCrimehttps://crimespace.ning.com/profile/austcrimefiction

Sure, he may have been returning fire, but the fact remains that Laver is the sixth Victorian policeman to shoot a suspect in four months, and that's all the politicians need to get involved. While the circus of an inquiry begins, Laver is moved from Major Crime to the Mobile Public Interaction Squad … aka the mountain bike police. Bitter, struggling to cope with the fatal shooting - not to mention his flailing relationship, Rocket is now wearing lycra and getting a sore butt on his bike seat.

Laver's friends and bosses in the force tell him to keep his head down until the storm blows over, but that doesn't factor in Stig and the Wild Man, two genuine bad guys Laver encounters on Smith Street, Collingwood. In innercity and outer-suburban Melbourne, major crime is in the air. Lives might be in danger but nobody will listen to a cop on the outer.

Add a nerdy supermarket-assistant manager in a bad reggae beanie, a hippy chick intent on saving the world, Nazi-like police rookies, mysterious men in suits and a human koala and you've got what it takes for a blackly funny action-packed addition to your spring/summer reading.

Full Review
Review - The Toe Tag Quintet, Matthew Condontag:crimespace.ning.com,2013-03-19:537324:BlogPost:3698682013-03-19T02:55:19.000ZKaren from AustCrimehttps://crimespace.ning.com/profile/austcrimefiction

Book Title: FURT BENT FROM ALDAHEIT
Author: Jack Eden
ISBN: 9781927182536
Series: Osgood Sneddon
Year of Publication: 2011
Publisher: Pear Jam Books
Location: New Zealand / Australia

Book Synopsis

His name isn't Furt Bent, and he isn't from Aldaheit. He's the persona that Osgood Sneddon invented for himself to rise above the mundane, and extricate himself from trouble when a moment's misunderstanding lands him on the wrong side of the law. Specifically, he falls on the wrong side of Hubbard - and that's the wrong place to be. Detective Inspector Hubbard is poisonous, profane and effective, and he doesn't let the truth get in the way of a result. Furt Bent, shaped by the folly of youth and the front yards of Australasia's nastiest prisons, becomes his nemesis. They stalk each other across the pages of this dark, artfully written novel in a story resonant with authenticity. Savour the bitter piquancy, where Underbelly meets Shawshank.

Full Review
