Man's Best Friend

Last week, I shared that Ellery had hit his head on the bedframe last week and given himself a concussion. His condition improved for a few days, and then stopped. We took him back to the vet, only to learn that his balance problems had been caused by cancer. X-rays showed that he had bone cancer, which had mestastisized into his brain. The poor sweety was in a great deal of pain, and with a very heavy heart, we had him put to sleep on New Year’s Eve.

Needless to say, we’re…

Running out of time...

Posted by Lorraine (L.L.) Bartlett

Tree Today is January 22nd and my Christmas tree is still up.

There, I've confessed. They say confession is supposed to be good for the soul, but this confession just makes me feel inadequate.

Believe me, I've never still had the tree up this late in the season. (Or am I just early for Christmas 2008?) My excuse? Being…

Hints for Time Management

My husband worries about me because I spend so much time in my office, doing "stuff." The problem with any profession is the all-absorbing quality of it, the inability to leave it alone. Writing is among the worst because it's always possible: if you're home, there's the computer. If you're away from home, you have a pad of paper and can make notes. You're always thinking about that plot-knot or how to make that character more real to the reader.

What does one do about it? Not much, I…

Just Blogging

The rules in blogging offer that you can blog about anything, but, they suggest only a little over a half a page to keep the reader's interest. So far, all of my blogs prove to be somewhat long-winded, well over a little over a half a page, but then, you should see my hand written letters and e-mails.

I have two blog pages that belong with my website Never Ending Riddle.com. Honestly, if you read one, you've read the other since I copy and paste from one to the next. You know what is…

Nearing the finish line, or just starting?

Well, I am about to hit the 200 page mark and felt as though it was down hill from there. The rest was going to write itself. It was going great guns and I was very happy with the book. I knew a couple of things would need some tweaking but that it was going good.

I decided to print out a copy of what I had. I'd then sit and read it like a book. I had avoided it until then, I didn't want to come to the conclusion that I had written was crap and wouldn't be able to go on.

Well I…

THE STALKER 3 (The Dickens Challenge)

3.

Soren Buchanan pulled his Jeep into the first available parking spot nearest the Agat Marina’s clubhouse and dragged a hand through his windblown hair. Saw dust rained down on his lap. He was liberally coated with the stubborn stuff, having spent all morning cutting plywood. His eyes were gritty with it and he needed a shower.

He shouldered the old Jeep’s creaking door open and contemplated not for the first time to just…

Groundhog Day

Husband Who Lives In Hope brings through the wine. I cart a collection of biscuits and chocolates that would make Willy Wonka barf.

We settle down in front of the TV to watch the latest episode of Messiah.

A very sexy Mark Warren struts gloomily through numerous religiously themed crime scenes.

'Do you think,' asks Husband Who Lives In Hope, 'that he ever notices that all his cases are a bit similar?'

Mark inspects a pair of blood stained hands forced to pray for…

Promotion

Posted by Sheila Connolly (caution: long post!)

In case you haven't heard, my first book is coming out in five weeks (eek! five? I'm not ready!). Therefore I am in the throes of promotion. Or rather, I'm trying to figure out what promotion is and what I can do about it. (I know, some of you out there are going to yell at me because I was supposed to start this the day I had a contract in hand. Or maybe earlier, like when I first started writing. Well, I did do some things right,…

Make Just One Someone Happy

The old song lyric says, "Make just one someone happy/ And you will be happy too."

I'm not sure if it's universally true, but it worked for me yesterday. After a stressful few weeks I received a few advance copies of Macbeth's Niece last Thursday. Because she's been very good to me for many years, I gave a local librarian an early peek, asking her to keep the book off the shelves until after my launch party. After driving through a nasty snowstorm I arrived home last…

Review - The Shadow in the River, Frode Grytten

The link below goes to a review of what's undoubtedly the first entry
in my Favourite Books of 2008. Frode Grytten is a Norwegian author who
grew up in Odda (the town that "features" in this book. Thought
provoking, unusual, more about the events and people surrounding a
crime than the crime itself, this was a fascinating book.

The Best American Mystery Stories

I finished reading "The Best American Mystery Stories" (2005) today. OK, so I have a large reading pile, and it takes me a while sometimes. What struck the most about this anthology is that very few of the stories actually have a mystery in them. Most were criminals going about their business, or people who were related to criminals going about their business or even police going about their business, but they were, in general, not solving or intrigued by, any mysteries. I've read…
