Colonoscopy...anyone?

A friend sent this to me, it's halarious! If you've had one you'll understand and if you haven't, your time is coming.

I called my friend Andy Sable, a gastroenterologist, to make an appointment for a colonoscopy. A few days later, in his office, Andy showed me a color diagram of the colon, a lengthy organ that appears to go all over the place, at one point passing briefly through Minneapolis ..

Then Andy explained the colonoscopy procedure to me in a thorough, reassuring… Continue

In my other life I’m a writer

One thing I have learned is that there are plenty of people who call themselves writers, but only talk about writing. There are equally as many who are hesitant to give themselves that title unless they currently have a bestseller.

So that begs the question, which one of these categories do I fall into? And why in the world do I think I should be on here, blogging merrily away, as if I know what I’m talking about?

I was a talker, who dreamed big and did little to get my dreams… Continue

I like it here...

Being a free-thinker used to be great, until the MBAs moved in and said "No more free thinking. We must charge for it now."

"But that isn't the meaning of 'free thinking!'" the author protested.

"Don't try to pull a zoigma on me!" and off they carted the trussed and shackled writer, to his isolation cell.

A few blinks into the future...

Welcome to the place of mankind's last best hope for freedom to write crime fiction and reality!

Terrible tv theme music

Remember the theme music (for all of you old enough to remember the series ) of Peter Gunn? How about Magnum, P.I.? Anyone remember T.H.E. Cat series?

Now take the theme song for the current NCIS series. Without a doubt the worst theme music ever! If the idea that the theme music help's make a series a success. . . then you have to say NCIS is an outstanding success to overcome the theme music it claims as its own!

But what to replace it with? Any suggestions? (Remember,… Continue

New book (ish ...)

I have a new website, where you can read the first two chapters of my new novel: www.matcoward.com

The site is courtesy of the (US) Authors Guild. This is a superb organisation, and I would strongly urge anyone who is published in the USA to join it - the benefits of membership are considerable. The Guild is at http://authorsguild.org

E-Books

Hi Everyone!

Can anyone recommend a good place to post an ebook? I have redone my published book and want to offer it as an E-book also. I know there are some "in's and out's" to it, I'm just not too familiar with E-books. Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Lee Martin

Can a geunine mystery be in a fantasy novel

Hmmm, a comment was made the other day by someone I know in another web-site I frequent that got me to thinking. Can a detective novel be written colored as a fantasy novel? Can a hard-boil style detective reside in sci-fi?

My first reaction was to say, why not? And then I got to thinking. Exactly what are the defined parameters for 'fantasy,' for 'detectives.' For any genre. If we have 'historical-detectives,' why not ones in fantasy? Is there a One True Rule (the OTR) which defines… Continue

Carlton Gary, The Stocking Strangler

Carlton Gary was born in Columbus in 1952. His father abandoned him early on and he grew up with his mother who moved from place to place and sometimes with his aunt.

He was only 16 when he started his criminal career, stealing cars and breaking and entering. He was convicted of firebombing a store because he… Continue

Smart Aleck Question

Name three things you mother was wrong about.

Name three things your mother was right about.

My mother?

She was wrong to doubt my choice of husband (and later admitted it).

That whole waiting-to-go-swimming-after-a-meal thing (not her fault.)

...there is no third thing. She was right about everything else.

Sean O'Brien and The Given Day

Aging reader population in mystery genre

I've heard this comment often in here. The mystery/detective genre's fans are getting long in the tooth--becoming antique oddities--and apparently there is no fresh blood coming into the fold.

Is that true? Really? I dunno--I am, like most of you, involved in other forums and interest sites, and I've have to say, I'm impressed with the number of readers under the age of 40 who frequent these places and love to read mystery/detectives. I don't see what the factors are which would… Continue

Stupid Cupid

This Saturday is the most romantic day of the year, and while this may mark me as unromantic, I don’t understand why Cupid was chosen to represent Valentine's Day. When I think about romance, the last thing on my mind is a short, chubby toddler coming at me with a weapon.

Besides, after a dozen years with the same lovely lady I’ve learned that love is more than romance. It’s not just looking at each other, it's looking in the same direction.
