Why Do We Keep Reading?

A discussion on a mystery chat group recently dealt with why we keep reading authors who long ago ran out of things to say to us. Either their work has grown stale or we ourselves have read enough of it to know exactly what's coming, yet we keep buying them, reading them, waiting for them to do it again.

I suppose it's habit, in part. It's also a desire to recapture that feeling of joy you once had, like going to your high school reunion and expecting to meet the cool dudes and… Continue

Contract Signed for New Release - 'Kiss of Life'

I'm thrilled to announce that Mythica Publishing will soon be releasing 'Kiss of Life' in both paperback and e-book editions. The novella is the sequel to my vampire tale 'Dracula Doesn't Live Here Anymore' recently released in paperback by Eternal Press, and which is picking up some great reviews from readers at Amazon. Graeme S Houston has once again surpassed himself with the stunning cover design for the book and the story itself takes up the tale a year after the events… Continue

Crashing newspapers: An ill omen for publishing?

I was gobsmacked recently when I read that the Boston Globe might be shut down by the New York Times. This story may be a bad omen for publishing in general. Read the post.

Weekly Blog - Monday 4th May

Justice For All has attracted another glowing review, this time from the Eurocrime website, which describes itself as a site for fans of British and European crime fiction writers. Eurocrime describes JFA as a ‘gritty book with an aggressive feel to it’ and says that it ‘builds up to a tense ending.’ In closing, the reviewer concludes that ‘this is a promising book from a new author, and I look forward to Zac's next outing.’ To read the full review, please visit… Continue

Popeophobia hits Holy Land

By Matt Beynon Rees, on Global Post

JERUSALEM — If you happen to be in the Holy Land next week and you have a beef with the pope, get to the back of the line.

In Nazareth, where Pope Benedict XVI will say Mass on May 14, the Islamic Movement accuses the pontiff of insulting Islam in a 2006 speech and leaflets have been distributed in the town calling for violence… Continue

The Fourth Bourne Movie

Somewhere a little birdy told me they're in the middle of production for the fourth Bourne movie. A movie this time not based off a book. Ooooh! Can't wait for that one! I love Bourne! In both the books and the movies!

Action movies are hard to make correctly. Simply throwing one more car chase or fake explosion onto the screen doesn't really satisfy me. But controlled violence that has a purpose behind it is far more fascinating! So far the Bourne movies have delivered. We'll… Continue

A DIFFERENT SHADE OF BLUE: HOW WOMEN CHANGED THE FACE OF POLICE WORK

Hi, Everyone: I'm very pleased to announce that my book will be out July 15. A DIFFERENT SHADE OF BLUE tells the history of female cops in America through the candid voices of 50 women on the Seattle Police Department. As one of the first cities to hire policewomen in 1912, Seattle provides the perfect backdrop to tell an amazing story – women’s ongoing struggle nationwide to fit into the male-dominated police profession. Three generations of women – black, white, Asian, Latina, gay, straight –… Continue

STATE OF PLAY is a Great Suspense Flick

I saw STATE OF PLAY today and thought it was a great film: a fascinating combination of ideas and a wonderful homage to the great ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN--evident in everything from Russell Crowe's 70s hairstyle to the scenes shot in a parking garage and outside the Watergate Hotel.

The film takes on the worlds of old and new journalism: Crowe… Continue

It's A Story!

If you're tired of hearing about my WIP, you'll be glad to hear that I finished it yesterday. Now, "finished" doesn't mean publishable or even submitable. It just means that I now have a story that goes from Point A, a murder, to Point B, a solution. And the best part is, it feels right.

There's a character who isn't right, but now that I know what she did, I know how to fix her. There are of course oodles of other things to fix: time lines, foreshadowing moments, and details, not to… Continue

The Writing Life interview: Alon Hilu

The most original voice in Hebrew fiction is that of Alon Hilu. His first novel “Death of a Monk” took a blood libel against the Jews of Damascus in 1840 and offered a startling alternative perspective on how the murder at the heart of the scandal might have taken place. The second of his novels “House of… Continue

Review of TWMK from Pat Mullan Author of The Root of All Evil

I was captured immediately by Chapter One, actually I was captured by the first sentence of the very first chapter. As I read on, I realized that I was in good hands, the hands of a writer whose skills never intruded on the page. That’s masterful. Many writers never achieve that. If I didn’t know you, and didn’t know that this is your first book, I would have attributed this work to someone with many years of successful writing accomplishment. You’ve made Megan McKenna someone that I care… Continue

Rogue Males also features an account of a trip to the desert to interview crime fiction greats Ken Bruen and James Sallis about the craft of writing. Murder Mystery Party at the Library!

Well, all week I've been plotting out a mystery party event for the library where I work. It's set to begin in about 30 minutes. 18 people are shortly to arrive to try and solve the mystery I've devised based on some of my novel writing. It'll be interesting to see what happens. Tonight's event is the third of its kind, but the first to cull plot details from the mystery series I write. Participants are going to have to solve 4 murders, 3 of which are retrospective. The setting is a library… Continue
