The Biggest Liar in Los Angeles

I want you all (and everyone else in the world), to know that The Biggest Liar in Los Angeles, book one (chronologically) of the Tom Hickey California Century series, came out on May 1. Set in 1926 (guess where), it features a lynching, dubious law enforcement and other sorts of misbehavior; and bigshots such as W.R. Hearst and Sister Aimee Semple McPherson.

I’ll be visiting in Scottsdale, Tucson, Los Angeles, Thousand Oaks, Pasadena, Portland, Seattle, and San Diego. If you live or… Continue

What do YOU think of me?

A friend of mine was lunching with a Scandinavian author a while back. At one point, the writer joked: “But that’s enough of me talking about myself. What do YOU think of me?”

Unlike that writer, I don’t care what you think of me. Don’t be offended – I don’t care what I think about other people, either. The more I write, the more I realize that I’m interested in myself alone.

That, I believe, is the necessary focus of all art – even…

Good times, danger signs in West Bank

BETHLEHEM, West Bank — The good news is that the West Bank is normal — kind of — and that people are content — sort of. The bad news, the Palestine Liberation Organization thinks it’s responsible for the good news.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who’s also the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) chief, has decided to stamp down on the man who’s actually made life bearable in the West Bank, Prime Minister Salaam Fayyad, and his plan to declare…

Why?

At last weekend's mystery conference we talked quite a bit about characters having believable motives. Even the most evil villains should be expected to pursue their objectives the easiest way. For example, if Wile E. Coyote from the Road Runner show had enough money to buy all that ACME crap, why didn't he just buy dinner?

The good, the bad and the plain ugly - reviews that is

I received an e mail from my editor to say that my latest marine mystery crime novel featuring Detective Inspector Andy Horton, Blood on the Sand, has been given a great review in the USA by Booklist. It's always nice to have good reviews and every writer cherishes them. It gives you a boost and spurs you on. Reviews come in three varieties: the good, the bad and the plain ugly. I'd rather…

Judging Books

I am a person of strong opinions, at least where books are concerned. However, I'm not likely to share them publicly, as in "I hated Jane Smith's newest release because..." Here's why.

Book-loving is subjective for me, as I suspect it is for most. I can't get past a weak plot or an unlikeable protagonist or side trips that muddy the story for no reason. I am aware that these are my own prejudices, and I am also aware that others often don't mind such things. This does not… Continue

Author Update

Some weekends are more fun than others, and this one was super. The fans at Malice Domestic are always warm and welcoming. Parnell Hall was hilarious, and it was moving to meet both Mary Higgins Clark and William Link (the guy who created Columbo, Mannix and tons of other great TV shows.) Aside from the awards banquet, the high point…

My poor, neglected CrimeSpace...

I feel just terrible. If you were my children, the DCFS would have hauled you all away by now, and with good reason.

First things last:

The lovely Patti Abbott recently tossed down the gauntlet to write a flash-fiction incorporating that smash hit by The Eurythmics, "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)." Here is my entry, hosted at Powder Burn Flash by the virile Aldo Calcagno: "Everybody's Looking for Elisa…

The Party's Over

We left Malice after closing ceremonies on Sunday, tired but happy. The traditional farewell tea was lovely, and I'd like to commend those who work so hard to make Malice a success each year. It's an effort-laden thing, making such an event look effortless.

Malice is a con devoted to (but not exclusive to) cozy writers, those who seldom dismember their vicitms and never in detail. Still, we are mystery writers, and death isn't pretty. At Malice one meets authors who include along…
