Time frames in novels - real time and fictional time

Time frames in novels, and particularly when writing a crime series, are a tricky thing.  There is 'real time' and then there is 'fictional time'.  In 'real time’ I write one DI Horton a year whereas in ‘fictional time’ the novels are currently set over a period of a year.

Holy Crap I'm #2 on Amazon!

This is big news. I knocked the price of my collection of experimental flash fiction, "4 Killer Crime Stories in 4 Minutes," down to free.

As of this writing, it's the #2 best-selling free (that's an oxymoron) collection of short stories in all of Amazon. You can see the list here: http://tinyurl.com/3wldvkm (Note that ranking is only as of this writing, I don't know if it will still be there when you see…

The Beginning of Criminal Profiling…

I’ve received many questions about profiling from readers.  It seems that many people are interested in this technique and how it actually works.  I can’t blame them because it’s an intriguing concept and that’s why I studied it along with my criminology.

In my books…

Thank You, CrimeSpace

Just wanted to take a time out from reading the threads and posts to say "thank you" to the CrimeSpace community. This year marked the culmination of a lot of hard work. I turned to the C'Spacers a lot during that time, and their insights helped me get to where I am today. I may not be rich or famous, but I've got a novel out I can be proud of.

Before you break out the guitars and sing, "Kumbaya," know that I'm not kissing anyone's arse in particular. It's just good to have a…

How Long Does it Take to Write a Crime Novel?

This is a good question.  It’s a solid, straight to the point question about writing.   It’s a question I’ve been asked quite a bit lately.

How long does it take to write a novel?

I’ve heard answers from it takes a lifetime to however long it takes you to read a book times a five hundred.  These responses make me laugh and are honest, but…

Around the Globe with DIANA BLACK

I step into my transporter on this hot Friday morning to pick up this week's featured author, Diana Black. I ask her where she wants to be interviewed and I hesitate before I put in the coordinates. Oh wow!

Soon, we are in the desert, strapping ourselves into a very large machine and before I can change my mind...

"Well, Ms. Black, here we are."

"Thanks, Stephen, for agreeing to do the interview on this awesome first commercial flight into outer space! Pictures of the… Continue

Review: "Godchild" by Vincent Zandri

The noir genre and I have an uneasy relationship. On the one hand, pitch black noir can entertain like no other. The characters are always in varying degrees of damnation, the violence is brutal, the alcohol/drug abuse is ubiquitous and nothing about the plot is as it seems.

On the other hand, there are certain noir stereotypes that never go away. If you've read one, you've read them all. There's the PI with the tortured past who drinks too much. There's the female in need of…

Sexy classical music and crime novels

When Peter Cook admitted to Dudley Moore that he was “turned on by dead Popes,” it was a satire on those among us who’re so bored by their lives as to be infinitely suggestible. Thus a dead pope lying on a catafalque in white robes looks “at peace, at rest, and ****ing fanciable.”

The joke, of course, is that no one could imagine the Pope as a sexual object, whether alive…

How do you cope with book reviews?

Opinion is free, and part of being a published author is that you have to accept that some people will love your books, others will loathe them.  What one critic raves over another will slate.  Most authors dread reviews.  For nine months (and sometimes longer for some authors) you have poured your heart and soul into that creation.  You have invested a great deal of time and emotion in creating it and, as with a child, you want it to be well received in the world. When it isn't it can hurt.… Continue

Computer Thief Unknowingly Creates His Own Mug Shot

We all have been made aware through cable news stories, magazine articles, and our own friends about the crimes that can be committed using a computer.  There is the growing menace of cyberbullying, through which (mostly) young people leave cruel remarks on Facebook or post embarrassing videos on YouTube.  Viruses can…
