Death Dealer (excerpt) free ebook

Excerpt from Death Dealer

by Lawrence Johnson Sr.

Not knowing when the deal was going down Steele dropped his bags off in the room and reached the marina just in time to see the Strictly Business and the second boat dock. Steele staked out a secluded spot about a

block from the yacht and watched through his night vision glasses.…

As a writer, do you find yourself reading to learn?

Ever since I embarked on this rewarding and yet sometimes challenging journey as an author, I find myself no longer enjoying the simple pleasures of reading a novel for the sake of enjoyment. Lately, every book I…

Today I went a little mad.

Things have been all around unsatisfactory. All those years of work. All those books. All of those miserable hours of promoting them. All of the diappointments. And nothing much to show for them.

So I blew the advances for my latest two novels (plus a sizable chunk of savings) on a painting.

Blood on the Sand to be published in paperback in September

First published in hardcover in the UK in February 2010 and the USA in May 2010, I am pleased that Blood on the Sand is to be published in paperback by Severn House in September.

In the USA, Booklist said of Blood on the Sand, 'This is another solid entry in a consistently well written series. Like Ed McBain, Rowson works many…

Mystery E-books for Writers and E-readers

For some time it has bothered me that there seems to be no site online where a person can read about ONLY mysteries published as e-books. With some trepidation and a lot of help, I’ve decided to attempt to change that. A friend has established a blog that will be dedicated solely to mysteries that are e-published. The submission process is somewhat experimental right now, but the plan is that authors will tell us about their books, following the template found on the site. Please be… Continue

If you have ever wondered what life is like in the rural northeast of Thailand I'd like to invite you to pay a visit to my blog. I have plenty of pictures I took myself (most of them anyway) around the village, the countryside and the city. I have posts about: the island of Phuket, Thai Ridgeback dogs, food, teaching English, Wood houses, farming and more.

Please come by, trade links with me, leave a comment, or just cruise…

Tragic friends on a search for peace

JERUSALEM—If you asked about a moment that encapsulates the tragedy of the Israelis and Palestinians, there’d be no shortage of incidents, fatal and wrathful, from which to choose. This week, however, I’d point out an occasion that was less shocking but just as poignant.

In a banquet hall of the King David Hotel, an Israeli leader and a Palestinian leader came to the podium together Sunday evening. They embraced, spoke of each other as good friends and…

Diner Downers

This morning my husband and I went to breakfast in a lovely mom and pop restaurant in our mid-sized, mid west town. As we were served, a group of five older adults settled into a large table nearby. Before they even had their coats off, they began exchanging obnoxious comments about the community in voices that carried throughout the little diner. While each barb was tossed out…

Accepting Submissions to The Chapter One Blog

Crime novels have the best first chapters, which is why I started The Chapter One Blog on my website. In a nutshell, send me your first chapter and I'll post it on my site.

There's no catch. It's a great way to promote your published and non-published work. But more importantly, it's an avenue for sharing great writing.

Full of Sin - my debut novel

Hi all,

I'm thrilled to have been introduced to this site by a fellow reader. I plan to participate as much as I can over the summer and beyond.

First, I thought I would introduce myself: I am an English teacher and I am thrilled that my debut novel, Full of Sin, was published in November. If it sounds interesting to you and you read it, I'd love to hear your thoughts. It's had a lot of acclaim from bestselling authors, so I thought I'd start off by…

Part #2 of Alex Steele and the Death Dealer has been uploaded

Excerpt from the Death Dealer

by Lawrence Johnson Sr.

Two hours later Steele found himself driving through the roughest

neighborhood in the city. No one in their right mind would come down

here alone in the daytime and most cops wouldn't risk traveling through

this part of town late at night but somehow on this dark, quiet night

Alexander Steele seemed to be drawn to it. There was movement in

shadows of the blocks and blocks of…

Switching Sexes

Oh, stop thinking that way!

My thought for the day comes from the night. Once upon a time, my husband wanted the bedroom cool (make that cold) and I wanted it warm. In our maturity, we have switched. These days I can't sleep unless the AC is on, and he suffers from an arthritic shoulder, so the blast of cool air keeps him awake with an ache.

Studies show that men and women make subtle shifts as they age that may reverse behaviors and attitudes from their…

Read international crime fiction instead, World Cup fans

World Cup fans, don’t fear hours of emptiness. Take up a work by an international crime fiction author. It’s the perfect replacement for your lost fix – and it’s a lot better for your soul, too.

Here’s why. As the World Cup unfolded over the last month, newspapers all over the globe were filled with articles in which journalists extrapolated from aspects of the play and team-make up of various countries to draw lessons about the politics and sociology of those…

Aging Writers

Young people can write, I will admit that. They can have talent, style, and a sense of story. But one gets a sense of life and living from the older writer that comes only from experience. Sadly, it is often sad.

Look at Mark Twain or William Shakespeare. As they aged, their works became less and less fun, more and more dark. Masterworks, some of them, but no happy endings.

I'm reading Walter Mosley's THE LONG FALL right now, and there's a passage that describes the… Continue
