REVIEWS ARE STARTING TO TRICKLE IN -

REVIEWS ARE GOOD. SALES ARE GOOD. WHOOPIE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Reminded me of the Golden Age of Detective Novels!, August 6, 2009

By Carole Gill (England) Author - See all my reviews

Memoirs of Bear reads like the best of the golden age detective novels.

There are few Detectives as interesting as Bear Williams, part Apache--and all American hero! He's hugely engaging.

It seemed to me as I read the novel,… Continue

A great “What if”: Richard Jay Parker’s Writing Life

In his terrific “On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft,” Stephen King notes that the best way to start a novel is with a compelling “what if.” Try this one: “Vacation Killer” sends out a chain email declaring that he’s kidnapped a woman and that if you don’t forward the email to 10 friends he’ll “slit the bitch’s throat.” That’s about as good a “what if” as anyone--Big Steve included--could come up with. It’s the premise for Richard Jay Parker’s debut… Continue

Character Sketch of the heroine

I've worked on my brief sketch of my heroine in The Last Rose. Kinzie Kilpatrick, Irish descent obvoiusly, fiery red hair, dangerous green eyes, a line of dark freckles across the bridge of her nose. 32 years old, never married though she had been engaged to someone once, no longer for reasons not to be discussed yet. Current lover/boyfriend is a retired police man who is now P.I. after his family was killed for seeing something that they should not have. He and the heroine have been close for… Continue

How Patient Will a Reader Be?

I'm reading one of those books where you get bits and pieces about a dozen characters, all interesting but sort of vague, with a lot of background what-they're-thinking stuff and no clue where it's all going. Because it's a writer I trust, I'm willing to go along, knowing it will all come together in the end.

My gold standard of this type of thing is A TALE OF TWO CITIES. As a kid I remember being extremely frustrated with Dickens' description of the servants bringing chocolate to… Continue

Meet Me in MD Tomorrow

Tomorrow I hope to repeat last weekend’s success at the Borders in Frederick, MD. The store was voted Frederick's Best Bookstore for 2006 and 2007 by Frederick Magazine, and I don’t think the vote is in for 2008 yet. But I’ll be proud to be there signing my novels starting at 1 pm, so stop by if you’re near there, at 5533 Urbana Pike, Frederick, MD.

New Republic: The Samaritan's Secret a 'wonderful detective thriller'

In his New Republic blog, the magazine's honcho Marty Peretz rightly rails at the failure of the Fatah Party to agree on anything at its conference this week in Bethlehem -- except that Israel killed Arafat. Rails because, of course, that's not going to reform this corrupt bunch of villains who're currently clogging Manger Square with their swanky… Continue

Writing Tools - Story Elements Worksheet

Writing is a very personal thing, and each writers process should be whatever they are most comfortable with. That said, sometimes it doesn't move the way you want it to. Hello everyone! The Last Rose

I haven't been in here much since I joined, but I thought I might do a littlel blogging. I"m not a blogger, so bear with me. Sometimes I may just type to type and clear up some writing block I've got. Like today actually.

The Last Rose is a mystery novel I"m working on creating. I'm doing most of it by hand and notebook right now, til I get all of my characters in order and the exact way things will go. I can tell you it's about a serial killer and amateur detective. The antagonist… Continue

Royalties!

For years now the most depressing mail has contained royalty statements from my American publishers. I keep them in a black folder and go into a long depression every time they arrive. They show negative dollar amounts. I owe thousands of dollars. And I hate owing money.

But behold: Here is mail with a fat royalty check! My first! And a very nice one it is in a year when I've earned all of $ 1,500 so far. The check is from my French publisher. Now why is it that the French can sell… Continue

NPR on crime fiction

Wisconsin Public Radio airs a full hour discussing contemporary crime fiction. It's mainly an interview with the best crime fiction blogger, Peter Rozovsky, whose Detectives Beyond Borders is a fabulous read, full of information and sound opinions. The radio show focuses on "noir" -- which Peter defines more convincingly than anyone I've heard before as fiction in… Continue

Alone at Last

My husband went to Canada this week, fishing. I believe Canadian fish are somehow more sporting fellows that United States fish. I'm not sure how they outclass our species. I suppose one has to meet the Canadian fish to spot the differences.

Anyway, with a whole, uninterrupted week, I imagined myself finishing off at least writing four projects. Of course I had lunch with two different friends, but lunch doesn't take that long. There are hours and hours both before and after that… Continue

The Last Man in London

Here's my latest post on the International Crime Authors Reality Check blog:

During my teens, my family lived in a house in Addington, at the very farthest reach of South London. At the bottom of the hill, the road made its final exit from London. Not quite wide enough for two cars, it traveled onto the North Downs of Kent. Sometimes I would ride my bike along the lane and up a hill overlooking the Downs and lie on the grass. I… Continue

A bloated, stinking mass of Ariel Sharon

The aptly-named Ariel Sharon Park

Opinion: Israel’s biggest garbage dump is being redeveloped — and renamed.

By Matt Beynon Rees - GlobalPost

TEL AVIV — A bloated, stinking mass that everyone would have preferred not to have to see, but which nonetheless was thrust upon them. A sight that shamed the people of Israel and ought to have been marginalized, but which was… Continue

The Asians are Coming! – “Adoption Group” Anniversary Party

September 1st marks the 6th anniversary of the day we first met our daughter Tammy-Li.

Little%20Santa.jpg

It was hot, which is normal for Nanning, Guang Xi Autonomous Region, People’s Republic of China. I remember all of the Dad’s were wearing shorts, and all the Mom’s wore shorts or sun-dresses. Nanning is on a latitudinal par with Cancun, Mexico, so palm trees lined the streets and there were jungles just outside the city limits.… Continue

So you want to write about serial killers?

I don’t know about you, but a serial killer is a sure way to get me to check out the cover copy of a book. Why are we as a society so fascinated by them? In my opinion it’s mostly their alien quality, the sense that they are something apart from the rest of us. Not to mention that we are used to being the top of the food chain, and serial killers imply that we really aren’t.

Whatever the reason, things sure have changed since we first saw Psycho. Due to the glut of serial killers in the… Continue
