Infrastructure Failure

Posted by Lorraine (L.L.) Bartlett

Bridge The recent collapse of the Minneapolis bridge was a warning to America that our infrastructure is failing. That's not surprising, considering that the U.S. system of repair and new-building is based on accepting the lowest bid. Pay crap--you get crap. In Europe, the road beds are several feet deeper than ours. They last…

Steve Hamilton

I went to see Steve Hamilton speak in Charlevoix, Michigan last night, and it was a good decision. I've enjoyed the Alex McKnight series for several reasons, primarily the Michigan settings that are familiar to me, the characters who are so well-drawn and lifelike, and the fact that my husband also likes them so we can talk about them together. (His usual Vietnam-era memoirs aren't so much fun for me.)

Steve is an entertaining and personable speaker who just talks about what he does…

Andrew Vachss at Pulp Pusher

We've had some big-name interviews over at Pulp Pusher lately...Ian Rankin, Nick Stone, Simon Kernick and now...Andrew Vachss!! The Burke creator takes the interview format to the max, however, sticking around for a 7,000 word marathon that Pusher will run over the next four weeks. Enjoy. And again. And again. And again. It's a four parter...see what I did there...eh?

And now let's go—live!—to a Zombie Gerbil from Outer Space

So, I'm looking over my upcoming book tour schedule for DYING TO BE THIN, which launches on October second. The tour includes several highlights that I’m especially thrilled about, including some media appearances (for updates, see my web site.)

Among other places, I’ll be appearing on a morning television show.

That interview will be the first time I’ve set foot inside a TV studio in more than twenty years. And…

The Nihongo Papers

I've started writing an Internet mystery serial for Discover Nikkei (Nikkei means of Japanese descent). Titled "The Nihongo Papers," it's actually a bio terrorism/paranormal thriller involving strawberries (!). It's great fun. I'm supposed to deliver a new installment each month for a year.

Here's the first:…

Bad Monkeys by Matt Ruff - review

Quick Take:

Bad Monkeys displays for us not only its, at times, dark humor but the patchwork juxtapositioning of odd and imaginative ideas that is Matt Ruff’s

trademark.

With a gun that kills people using natural causes, a secret organization that spies on people via the eyes on pictures called The Panopticon, axe-wielding clowns in Vegas and great chapter…

Joy and Repetition

I have once again finished all the required edits on my new mystery Tree Huggers (as I expected, the editor had more corrections) and the publication date is sometime in December.

Which means it's time to get in gear for marketing.

I hate marketing. Like most writers, I'm perfectly happy to sit hunched over my computer weaving tales of mystery (or romance or horror or long depessing accounts of our own miserable lives and calling it…

Motivation

I was surprised not too long ago to get a call from an acquaintance with a problem. As we had talked over the years about writing, he'd told me he had several manuscripts in a drawer somewhere that he'd written as a younger man. He was interested in my quest for publication but maintained that he was too busy with work and family to try it himself. But when the news came that his job would disappear within a few months, he contacted me to ask about getting an agent. It seems he considered…

Playing Games

Posted by Sheila Connolly

Like a lot of writers, I can't stop acquiring books. I can't walk past a bookstore–particularly one with used books–without stopping just to take a look. And I'm drawn to flea markets and yard sales where books are stacked in unsteady piles, priced to sell–a quarter, a dollar tops. As a result, over the years I have ended up with a rather eclectic assortment of books. I have never regretted buying Emily Post's Etiquette, because if I'm…

Idiot

I attended a MacMillan Publishers christmas highlights presentation this evening. Imagine my surprise when they asked ME up to talk about Ken Folletts new book 'World without End'. It seems I was the only person in the region to get a reading copy. Well, I am not good at talking to crowds and especially when I haven't had time to prepare. When I sat down I realised I hadn't actually told them anything about the book except I loved it, it was a saga, had lots of sex in it and was crying out for… Continue

Zoё Sharp at the Velma Teague Library in Glendale, AZ

Zoё Sharp, author of First Drop and Second Shot, the Charlie Fox thrillers that are set in the U.S., appeared today at the Velma Teague Library in Glendale, AZ. She and her husband, Andy, arrived early enough that Zoё was able to judge the final pictures in our library photo contest.

If you get the chance to… Continue

On the Road Again (again) heading to Bouchercon

I'm in Port Hardy, B.C. tonight, waiting to catch tomorrow's Ferry to Prince Rupert. From there I'll drive up to Anchorage for Bouchercon. It's a long trip, but one I've wanted to do for a long time. Three years ago my mother and I spent a week in the Yukon. We didn't see a thing - the smoke from forest fires was so thick that in all the time we were there (and we drove from Whitehorse to Dawson City via Tok, AK) we didn't see a mountain. We kept looking at pictrues of what we were supposed to… Continue

A Magnificent Voice by Margot Justes

Luciano Pavarotti is gone, his remarkable voice silenced. His recordings have been selling out, but I for one, had not been able to listen to his voice since his death. This weekend my younger daughter came home and brought a recording of Turandot with Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavarotti and at her insistence I listened. His rendition of Nessun Dorma always brought goose bumps, today it brought tears. My daughter graciously pointed out I was a blubbery cry-baby. She was right. His voice… Continue

Fan Club

Now I don't

normally like to blow my own trumpet (although I knew someone at school

who was double jointed and used to smugly claim that he could) but in

this case I couldn't resist.

Yes, it's official, I have a fan club. And no it wasn't set up by my mum. It's on the stupidly popular… Continue

North to Alaska!

Meredith and I will be attending BOUCHERCON 2007 in Anchorage, Alaska at the end of September 2007.

We will both be appearing on panels and signing our thriller, LADYKILLER, and attending workshops and the like. Bouchercon is a great mystery writers' conference and attracts many writers, publishers, agents, booksellers, reviewers, librarians and fans.

If you attend, please say hello. We can be found, no doubt, in the bar most nights!

Shameless Plug #2

Its been a busy few weeks, I've finished work on the 3000 word ECA, known informally as the monster and its gone off to be marked, they'll let me know how I've done before Christmas, lets hope the result doesn't take the shine off the tinsel eh?
