I have just received copies of the Polish translation of my thriller
In For The Kill. (The Polish version is on the left, and the English one on the right in case you have any doubts!) It's always exciting to see your work in another language.
Red Horse Publishers based in Poland bought the translation rights to three of my crime and thriller novels earlier this year and…

As I read through the posts on several writer/reader forums I've joined, it strikes me that we're different. Now isn't that profound?
Different means that a book I like, for example, Craig Johnson's A Cold Dish, made a reader post that she'd given up on it because it took too long to tell the story, and a book I find corny and in fact irritating is someone else's "brilliant read." If you've read earlier posts you can guess which authors I don't care for in the mystery genre, and my…

When I address writers' groups like the one I spoke to Saturday I spend very little time on theory or on the traditional wisdom of the writing business. Almost everything I tell them is based on my personal experiences in the trenches of writing, publishing and marketing. And in that process I share another important lesson.
Writers as a group are pretty generous with their advice, especially with stories about their careers, and less experienced writers should always take advantage…

Local Fame Beckons?
This week’s blog comes to you a bit earlier than usual, as my talented web maven Chris is off on her hols for a well-earned break, no doubt happy to be free of my daily e-mails asking her for another ‘minor update’ for the site! This also means that the blog is shorter than some of the novellas I’ve been posting recently, as at the time of writing I’m only halfway through the week.
Anyway, to business. Wednesday 10th September saw the publication…

I did something after it was clear Hurricane Ike wasn’t going to hit Key West that I hadn’t done in more than 12-years, I drove almost 500-miles to St. Augustine, Fla. I was invited to participate in the first Florida Heritage Book Festival as a panelist to discuss journalism. I was also offered two different signing opportunities for my mystery novel, “Chasin’ the Wind.” Unlike many events, the festival paid for my hotel room.
Round…

Yesterday I made the trek across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, a place that could culturally be another state or perhaps even another country. It's a place where people are gracious and open to strangers, and courteous to a fault. And a place where quiet is valued for its own intrinsic worth.
There I was welcomed by the members of the Eastern Shore Writers Association (ESWA) who listened to my talk on constructing a plot and asked lots of great…

My "real" blog is at http://bethgroundwater.blogspot.com/ if you want to find out more about me and what's happening in my writing life, but here's some information about three online interviews with me that have been posted in the last two months, if you're interested. Enjoy!
Marta Stephens recently interviewed me and posted the result on her blog, "Murder by 4", Friday. She got me talking about my new book, TO HELL IN A HANDBASKET, that will be released in May, 2009, so stop by for…

You can make a good case for Ernest Hemingway having left a profound mark on hardboiled crime fiction.
Graduate students and crime fiction aficionados have murdered trees arguing whether Hemingway influenced Dashiell Hammett or whether inspiration ran the other direction.
Raymond Chandler incorporated Hemingway in his fiction, wrote an astonishingly inept parody of Hemingway prose and staunchly defended Hem’s much-pilloried novel
Across the River and Into the… Continue

Though not the largest award in the world I am still pleased to say that
'A Study in Red - The Secret Journal of Jack the Ripper' was given the accolade of 'Erin Aislinn's Book Cover of the Week' for the week commencing 28th July 2008. It's always nice to be appreciated and this small award is just as important to me as any of the larger ones that the book has so far picked up. 'A Study in Red'…

A new anthology from Echelon Press-Missing- is scheduled to debut at Bouchercon in Baltimore, MD next month.
Many wonderful writers, among them our own ACME author Norm Cowie donated a short story. All the stories have a common link-a missing person, and royalties are being donated to charity.
In 2007 they were over 800,000 people who disappeared- are missing-that is a staggering number. Hopefully our efforts will leave a mark-it is a step in the right…

I already told you that today I'll give a presentation - to the
Eastern Shore Writers Association - at 11 am at the Waterview Grill in the Easton Club, 28449 Clubhouse Rd., Easton, MD.
BUT I won't slight my Virginia fans this weekend. Sunday I'll return to the Borders Express at Dulles Town Center for a book signing from noon to 4 pm. So if the Eastern Shore of Maryland is too far away, catch me at this store at 21100 Dulles…

Check out My Photos for a selection of pictures taken at the September 5th Book Launch Party for BLOOD ALONE. Over eighty people attended and were treated to a slide show of Sicily photos, featuring the settings for Blood Alone. Also, my wife Debbie Mandel cooked up a storm and provided homemade Sicilian baked goods to help set the mood. Sicilian wine, Italian beer, good conversations and lots of books sold and signed - it was a great party! Photos courtesy of Mischa Lassow.

The first thing you must have if you are planning on becoming a writer is at least one alternate source of income. And health insurance. The second thing you must have is a thick skin with regards to rejection.
The reason for both of these requirements is the same. You get published very little compared to your submissions. And when you do get published, it doesn’t necessarily pay much or anything.
The third job requirement is a love of writing. If you don’t love it, you…

It's a blessing and a curse in our family. We hum or sing aloud if we're not careful, and it doesn't matter where we are. As a kid, I used to subtly (I thought) remind my mother not to break into song in J.C. Penney's or in the stall of a the public restroom. Now I do it, and although so far I've managed to limit myself to a dignified hum, I know my genetics. It's only a matter of time until I'm singing golden oldies in full voice as I stroll the malls and sidewalks of America.
There…

Tomorrow I get to meet with some old friends on the other side of the Chesapeake. The
Eastern Shore Writers Association - (ESWA) invited me to be their speaker at this month’s meeting. The ESWA exists to support those who write or enjoy writing. As such, they are a very diverse group of poets, novelists, writers of stories, essays, articles, and memoirs, plus a few editors and small publishers. Each year this same team of creative…

I registered for Bouchercon a couple of months ago, and I've been checking the list of attendees. But yesterday I checked the preliminary schedule for the first time, and learned to my chagrin that I haven't been assigned to a panel. I'd had a hunch this was the case, since I hadn't heard anything from the organizers; even so, I'm disappointed.
I'm not surprised, though, since I published both my novels with a print-on-demand publisher, Virtual Bookworm. I'm very pleased with the…
