4 Days and Counting

On Monday, my third book, the second in the Nolan, Hart and Tain series - THE FRAILTY OF FLESH - goes on sale. Well, to be technical, if you pre-ordered it from Barnes and Noble it's being shipped as we speak (according to my mother).

I would expect the odd review to be popping up about FRAILTY, but it's interesting to see that reviews continue to appear for WHAT BURNS WITHIN. The latest sums up with:

"What Burns Within is a vividly told story with a propulsive forward… Continue

When Do They Start Asking Me?

Since I started this publishing thing, it seems like I'm always asking people for something, which is my least favorite thing in the world (well, at least in the bottom ten, along with colonoscopies and people who cut me off on the freeway). Raised to be a rugged individualist, I have a natural aversion to asking for favors, yet I have to ask media people to cover my "events," ask publishers to take a look at my writing, and book lovers to buy my books. So I can't help but wonder when it turns… Continue

Scribbling Update

I've started some of the heavy lifting with my non-fiction book. To those who are new to this blog, I'm doing a book based on the writings and ideas of my main blog which combines satire and common sense to dissect how pop culture, mostly the movie business, is run.

I know I can't just paste in my articles, no matter how tempting that is, so I have a lot of updating, editing, and adjusting to do.

Wish me luck.

Oh, That Feedback!

Yesterday's post was about wondering what the audience is thinking during and after I speak. Well, two answers came since then that help. A lot.

I got an email from my webpage from a listener at my latest Reading Romance talk, and a personal email from the person who arranged my latest Write, Edit, Publish Workshop. Both were positive and specific, telling me what they'd heard from participants and what their own response was as well.

That's very helpful. I'm not one for… Continue

Very Punny

As much as I love playing with the language, I recognize that too many puns can sometimes cause confusion. For example, one joker remarked:

I used to be a lumberjack, but I just couldn't hack it. So they gave me the axe.

Cute, I thought, but if they gave him the axe, it sounds as if they wanted him to return to lumberjack duty.

Oh, and just a reminder: yesterday I told you that today my guest blog is on Acme Author… Continue

An All Time High for 'A Study in Red'

'A Study in Red - The Secret Journal of Jack the Ripper' this morning registered a sales ranking of 11,262 at Amazon.co.uk, it's highest ranking so far. With over 3 million books available from the site I'm so pleased that, for however short a time, my novel has almost made it into the top 10,000. Now that would be something! the current ranking is visible at… Continue

Ouch! Roasted!

Come rake me over the coals at The Book Roast today! Read the excerpt, then answer these three questions served up by my intrepid roastmaster for a chance to win a copy of FREEZING POINT:

1) What kind of vehicle does Karen typically drive, and why?

2) Zo obviously frequents the Ice Shelf often. Why doesn't she just stay home and keep her peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the freezer like the rest of us? (10 words or… Continue

Yesterday I flew a plane. No...wait...let me say that again because I'm not sure you heard it correctly. YESTERDAY I FLEW A PLANE!!!!! Just call me Biggles.

An Orwellian World

Our privacy rights are protected in the Fourth Amendment's ban on "unreasonable search and seizure." Any good police detective will tell you how important it is to establish the chain of evidence, and how easily a mistake can get the evidence thrown out of court.

The Communications Act of 1934 expanded and clarified Fourth Amendment rights when it banned recording or intercepting communications without the consent of at least one party. The Federal Wiretap Act of 1968 made electronic… Continue

Audiences: What Are They Thinking?

As I speak to more and more groups, I find myself wondering on the way home, "What did they really think?" It's not a question one should stress over, but it is helpful to consider the audience's post-speech behavior and comments. Did they bolt for the door at the end or stand around and chat? Did the comments about the talk seem genuine or dictated by societal politeness? ("It was very nice," is damned faint praise.) And was the non-verbal feedback positive?

Non-verbal feedback… Continue

Guest Blog Tomorrow!

This week you can spot me in some rather different places. For example, tomorrow I will be a guest blogger on Acme Author Link. That blog is a place where eight great crime writers regularly share their writing life, everyday life & whatever writing tips they've learned along the way. I'm both proud and flattered to have a chance to appear there.

Big Author Update and the NEW BOOK!

It has indeed been a fun week, topped off with a fine showing signing my novels at the Borders Express in Dulles Town Center. We ran completely out of two of my titles - The Troubleshooter and Collateral Damage - but if you’re in that area, don’t worry. They’ll order more.

Also, my new Blood and Bone trailer turned up in a few new places including on BN.com

and popular video site… Continue

A Day With Mary

This is Mary Effemka, who is one of the loveliest people it has ever been my pleasure to meet. She is a cook at the school here and when I left last year she gave me a lovely note and gift. I saw her briefly on Thursday as I arrived and she left for an in-service day and I was sad that I wasn't going to get to see her for longer. But she stopped by the B&B on her way home… Continue

Snow Is Very Cold...

...when you fall flat on your face in it.

This will be a post with a lot of random stuff that I have forgotten to mention before. Yesterday, being a Saturday, there was no school. So Alfreda and Samuel had said that they would take me for a walk around the village. So I walked uptown to pick them up, then we went downtown, then we went back uptown again. It's a very… Continue

Jane's Favorite Building in New York

When I stand on my balcony, I can see the United Nations, the East River, the famous Pepsi sign, and Egypt, Nigeria, and Kuwait's missions to the U.N. But most of the time, that's not where I look. My attention is usually fixed on one of the United Nations Plaza buildings. It's my favorite building in New York.

Look at the top. Doesn't it appear to be paper thin? Isn't that astonishing? How do architects and builders do that? What… Continue
