On Her Trail

Antler Dust is

based on a woman I met many years ago while my wife and I were on a

day-long horseback ride.

We were staying at this guest ranch for a week

and this guide was simply A-plus. She was knowledgeable, fun,

articulate, patient, and seemed to enjoy the outdoors in a way that was

simply off the charts. Nothing was routine, every vista was to…

SLIDE by Ken Bruen and Jason Starr

Picking up from last year's Bust,

Max Fisher wakes up in a motel in Robertson, Alabama, no idea how he

got there. Using his friendship with a young stoner desk clerk, Max

returns to New York as a high-rolling crack dealer. Meanwhile, femme

fatale Angela Petrakos finds herself mixed up with an aspiring Irish

serial killer called Slide.

Slide is less plot-driven than… Continue

BUST by Ken Bruen and Jason Starr

Bust begins with cheapskate

tech millionaire Max Fisher plotting the murder of his overbearing wife

Dierdre so he can live happily ever after with his busty Greek-Irish

executive assistant Angela. Max contacts a peculiar hitman calling

himself Popeye, who is actually Angela's lover, Dillion, with whom she

plans to rob Max blind.

Got all that? To reveal any more would spoil the book's madcap fun. The characters are all… Continue

Freed By The Blouse

Liberation came for me in the guise of a roomy, cream colored blouse with buttons made of a rich, honey-colored teak

in varying sizes and shapes. It was an over-the-hips blouse with

two-inch slits up the sides which allowed free movement across an ample

backside. This blouse covered a multitude of sins and I was in my

glory. Who would have thought that the big clothes I used to hide

in would one day be in style?

That was when I was a size…

Day 3 - Saturday

Went to my writer's meeting. Grocery Store afterwards. Watched LSU struggle to win against Alabama. Wrote 2,054 words for NaNoWriMo. Their site is down so I can't post until tomorrow. :( Well, I guess I could stay up for two more hours but then I'd sleep through church.

Today I learned that those who speak the loudest (and the longest) actually know the least. Don't ask me where I learned that little tidbit. :( I won't tell. But I'll continue to remind myself to speak quietly and for…

Bookgasm needs your vote

Plain and Simple please vote for us. None of us are paid and the recognition would be payment enough if we beat the two biggies. I know some of my friends here have been reviewed on our site.

I just got word that Bookgasm is one of 10 finalists up for the Best Literature Blog award for the 2007 Weblog Awards, the world's largest annual blog competition. We're up against such competitors as McSweeney's and Neil Gaiman's blog.

But I think we deserve to win, don't you? That's… Continue

Wasting my time

So, I read Bust by mssrs Starr and Bruen. Jesus, did that book change my life! After wasting a good couple days swallowing that car wreck of the English language, following characters that were about as intersting as a census form and likable as the ex who gave you HIV, I've decided to finally pull Peter Pointer out of my muddy crevice and hammer the keys like they're the aforemention squeeze. Like every other wannabe this side of Cheeseville, I've hitched myself up to the NaNoWriMo... like it… Continue

Old Habits Die Hard

A quick note to report 3,087 words today on my NaNoWriMo wip. I'm soooooo very proud of myself. Have to strut a lttle. :) Of course, tomorrow or the day after I'll probably be whining. I've learned three things about myself:

1) I spend way too much time in front of this computer -- surfing on the pretense of doing research.

2) I'm actually more creative sitting on the sofa, feet propped up on coffee table and laptop in position. I can actually write, be with hubby and watch TV.…

What's New for November

Hi, everyone. Today I posted November's WHAT'S NEW page on my website http://www.davidmorrell.net. This month, I'm delighted to announce that the classic TV series ROUTE 66 has finally been released on DVD. The scripts by Stirling Silliphant are the reason I became a writer. The series is the single greatest…

AMAZON DEBUT

Hooray and halleluiah! My new book the BRIMSTONE MURDERS just popped up on Amazon. The book won’t be released until the first of February, but Amazon is accepting advance orders

and offering a nice discount, I might add. So, last night I sent emails to

family and friends, nice people who had previously expressed interest in my

books.…

And Next: THE NEW YORK TIMES!

Coming this weekend! Haven't seen it yet, so I'm holding my breath a little. It's Marilyn Stasio reviewing. Why, oh, why, has this taken five books? It illustrates that all success comes to me the hard way. Oh, well.

Deadly Duo Targets Illinois Readers

Wheaton, IL–October 2007—Clues indicate that a dangerously disarming duo of authors is targeting Barnes & Noble stores in the Chicago area. Mystery fans should be on the lookout for Luisa Buehler, author of the Grace Marsden mystery series and her partner in crime, Robert Goldsborough, author of the Snap Malek mystery series. Reports indicate that this clever and entertaining pair are making appearances at a variety of events, bookstores,…

Reality in Fiction

My interest in blending historical and fictional characters in a novel came with the reading of E.L. Doctorow's 1975 book Ragtime. In that panoramic story, which covered the first two decades of the 20th Century, Doctorow weaved a cornucopia of real people through his colorful tale.

Theodore Roosevelt, Booker T. Washington, Harry Houdini, J.P. Morgan, Henry Ford, Sigmund Freud, and famed architect Stanford White are among…

Fictional Jack

One of my recent adventures is presenting a talk on fiction devoted to Jack the Ripper. Since I write in the late Victorian world, Jack is a sinister backdrop to my stories. Though there are countless Ripperologists out there still trying to suss out Jack, I was more interested in how authors view him/her. So I started reading. And reading. Last October I had the opportunity to present my Once Upon a Dark Alley: A Tale of Ripper… Continue

Cooking Things Up

Posted by guest blogger Kate Flora

Sometime around early November, when the leaves are sailing down from the trees and the air grows nippy, I move my attention from the pleasures of the perennial gardens to the pleasures of the kitchen. In spring and summer, I'm so challenged by the job of balancing dedicated writing time with time spent gardening that I resent having to also keep house and prepare meals. This is when I entertain fantasies of…

The Russians Are Coming

Short post due to the fact that a Russian publisher has requested one of my MSs. It raises all sorts of questions, but right now I'm just concentrating on a timely and professional presentation.

One might wonder about Russians reading Elizabethan mysteries, but my experience has been that they (along with many other countries) have a much better grasp of world literature than most Americans. Russian exchange students I taught in high school had read more American lit than the vast…

Audio - Cross Posted from Type M 4 Murder

Vicki here, and tonight I'm in Fort Bragg, California heading for the improbably named Gualala where I'm doing a booksigning tomorrow at Four Eyed Frog Bookstore. With a name like that, I'm expecting a fun place!

I've been on the road since May. I've crossed half of Canada, from Oakville, Ontario to Tofino (as far west as you can go before getting wet) and by this time next week I'll have driven from Alaska to San Diego. I'm getting very, very tired of the CDs I have in the car. I love… Continue

Being Social

Well, it's come to this. I've avoided social networking sites for quite a long time. I do have a blog and maintain my website, email with friends and occasionally post on certain message boards, but I try to avoid anything that takes me away from writing for too very long. I'm good enough at wasting time without any assistance.

However, Crimespace is cool and much like a magpie is attracted to shiny objects, I'm easily attracted to cool things. So here I be. What's my…
