Chapter 2...kinda

Well, I was planning to blog a little bit today about Chapter 2 of Coming Home – you know, how it was going, what I’d written so far, etc. One problem with that: I haven’t started it yet! I feel like a naughty child confessing to something…well, naughty.

Rest assured, I will finish Chapter 2 this weekend – but it might be a busy weekend!

I’ve had a lot on though…I… Continue

Lift off!

On Tuesday this week I started writing the new Sophie Anderson book, Coming Home. Check out my YouTube video to see how it looked after 24 hours: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLG7C0Wzb7I

As the voting deadline got closer, a clear leader began to emerge for my first question: What sparks Sophie to investigate her brother’s murder? And it seemed that option A had it: After 28 years with no abductions or… Continue

The countdown is on

With only a few days to go, it seems the basic premise for the first chapter of Coming Home has been decided. Thanks to everyone who’s voted so far!

What sparks Sophie to investigate her brother’s murder? Thirty percent of voters went for: After 28 years with no abductions or murders similar to John’s a young boy is abducted (or found dead) in very similar circumstances.

The two options coming in equal second are only at 18%, so I can’t imagine they’ll topple option A.… Continue

Review: Exit Strategy by Kelley Armstrong

In this week’s blog I’m going to review a book I finished a couple of days ago, Exit Strategy by Kelley Armstrong.

Kelley Armstrong is better known for her paranormal books and series (including the Women from the Otherworld Series), but Exit Strategy is about a hitman…well, actually a few hitmen, a couple of hitwomen and a serial killer.

The main character, Nadia Stafford, is an ex-cop turned hitwoman/vigilante. Of course, being a hitwoman isn’t a… Continue

New blog features, Melbourne Cup and interesting resource

Today I’m launching my new blog features! My web guru has incorporated Wordpress into the site, which gives me some of the more standard blog features such as the blog roll, an RSS feed and a comment field.

To sign up to the RSS feed on my website, go to: http://pdmartin.com.au/blog/

Onto writing…or maybe not….

I have to confess, not much went on this week in the way of writing or author-type activities. I did, however,… Continue

The storyboard

I’ve started work on the page proofs for the Aussie release of book 5, Kiss of Death. However, I decided to spend this blog talking about the storyboard for The Killing Hands book trailer…I mean, you guys don’t need to know if there was a typo on page 54 of my page proofs, now do you?!

I’ve gotta say, it was pretty exciting when I saw an email with two attachments – one PDF file and a QuickTime file titled “storyboard”. Of course, my natural reaction was to madly click on the… Continue

Page proofs and case files

Well, the page proofs are now sitting on my desk, ready for action! That’s right, Kiss of Death, book 5 in the Sophie Anderson series, is almost ready for the printers here in Australia – sorry, quite a bit longer until press time in other countries :(

My job now is to do a final proof of the typeset pages and write the acknowledgements – that’s it. Can’t believe it’s almost done. A huge sense of both relief and fear; relief that I’m finished and fear that it’ll soon be entirely out… Continue

Who's got time to write?

Another week? Gone already? Yet again, no writing or editing this week, but I’ve managed to get some book-related work done.

After some umming and ahhing, I’ve finally chosen the video producer for my book trailer. He’s Aussie-based and has done some recent work for Pan Macmillan Australia, my Aussie publisher. You can see a few of his book trailers at: www.youtube.com/user/PanMacmillanAus

I’ll be… Continue

Book trailers - 25 September 2009

This week has flown by and, I have to admit, I’ve hardly spent any time on book-related stuff. Instead, I’ve been having lots of quality mother-daughter time with my 2yro. Had a lovely visit to the Collingwood Children’s Farm today…but you probably don’t want to hear about the delight on my little girl’s face as she held a guinea pig and patted baby goats (yes, I know they’re called kids, but saying kids might have been… Continue

The Murderers' Club meets Turkey

Seen the news about the women who were rescued by the Turkish police yesterday? Remind you of anything? Like The Murderers’ Club perhaps? Please note, if you haven’t read The Murderers’ Club yet, this blog contains some spoilers!

So, I got a phone call from my husband today asking if I’d seen the news about the women who’d just been rescued in Turkey. Turns out they thought they were part of a Big Brother-style TV show, only to find out that the whole thing was a scam. Instead of… Continue

Ahhh!!!!!

Is it okay/acceptable for a blog to just have this?

Ahhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean, I could continue the exclamation marks for a few lines, if it’d make you feel better. You know, you think you’ve signed up for something substantive and you get a blog that just has one word in it. I mean, that’d be pretty crap, right? A violation of the unwritten author-reader code of conduct.

Anyway, you’re probably wondering why I’m… Continue

Event madness

It’s event madness for me at the moment (plus editing of course).

Last Friday night I was in Foster for an author talk, and then headed back on Saturday to catch some other authors talking about their books and work at The Crime and Justice Festival. In the end, I only went to two sessions – one on the criminal mind (right up my alley) and one on being an undercover cop in the mafia. Really enjoyed both and was dying to see more on Sunday,…

Editing, editing, editing

For the most part, I love the editing process. You submit your book with the initial panic that it’s crap and your publisher will hate it, but then you get the thumbs up. Phew! And then comes the detailed editorial report, which not only points out all the good things in the book, but also how to improve it. And like every writer, I’m all for making each book the best it can be.

But one of the things I HATE about editing is the scenes and lines that end up on the cutting room floor,… Continue

Sophie's back!

Another action-packed week. First off, Fan Mail is now available in the US and Canada! Find out more here:

www.pdmartin.com.au/menu.aspx?mID=3&nID=22

This week I also sent the first three chapters (and the only chapters in existence) of a new book to my agent. It’s not crime fiction, and if she likes it she’ll try to find a publisher for it. Fingers crossed!

This week Sophie… Continue

Just chillin'...kind of

This week’s been a relatively quiet one for me. Book 5 in the Sophie Anderson series, KISS OF DEATH, is currently with my Aussie publishers, Pan Macmillan. It feels a little like Sophie is away visiting – but she’ll be home soon. In fact, I’ll be getting the editorial report next Friday 3 July.

It’s always a nerve-wracking time for an author, and that first week is especially tense. Will the publisher/editor like the book? Will they identify many problems? Luckily I heard back from… Continue

Getting the words on the page

I've started blogging weekly on my website - www.pdmartin.com.au - but will also post the blogs here too.

Friday 19 June

A couple of weeks ago I was on a panel for the Emerging Writers’ Festival (EWF) here in Melbourne.

The topic was Just write Dammit! and the brief was to discuss our writing techniques.

The other panellists were:

Victoria Carless – a playwright who also works in fiction, film and feature writing.…

Fan Mail now out in the UK

Fan Mail is the third in my crime series featuring Aussie FBI profiler Sophie Anderson.

In Fan Mail, Sophie is working a case where fiction has become fatal. A popular crime writer is murdered and posed just like the crime scene in the dead author’s last book. Full synopsis

Fan Mail also answers some of those lingering questions from The Murderers' Club, so all will be… Continue
