A New Year

A New Year

On the last day of Bouchercon, in Anchorage, Alaska, a group of Sisters and Brothers in Crime joined together for breakfast and for hailing in a new year of work. Reports were given on the various aspects of the organization (treasury, special projects, PR, Forensics U, and more) and a new Board of Directors was voted in. The new Board is as follows:

Roberta Isleib, President

Judy Clemens, Vice President

Marcia…

Take a Break

by S.J. Rozan

Some people tell me I have an impressive work ethic, an admirable sense of discipline. I say I'm slightly obsessive, not to mention a little compulsive. I write every day, as a rule, and it's a rule I take seriously. Many elements go into the creation of a book, but no book was every created without the most basic element of all:…

SinC Chapters

I'd like to put the focus on chapters for a moment. You can belong to Sisters in Crime without joining a chapter--but if you don't belong to a chapter, you could be missing some of the most rewarding benefits and opportunities that SinC can offer.

For starters, chapters are one of the best ways to get to know your fellow Sisters in Crime--the people who love mysteries the way you do. The people who write the mysteries you read--or read the mysteries you write.

I have writer…

2007-2008 Sisters in Crime Book Events – Opportunities for all SinC Members

Sisters in Crime has been doing book events all over the country for as many years as I can remember. I think I remember booking a booth in 1992 for Sisters in Crime at the Miami Book Fair. Since then we’ve always had a presence at Malice Domestic, Bouchercon and the American Library Association Conference. In fact there have only been two library liaisons for Sisters in Crime in fifteen or so years. Could that be? The wonderful Kathy Harig pioneered the job dragging materials all over the…

Libraries in the 21st Century

When Edison first invented his phonograph, there were articles in various periodicals that the book public libraries would be a thing of the past.

Books and libraries are still with us, though now the printed word is available in electronic form and in audio books on tape, CD and MP3...and who knows what devices in the future.

The public has mostly turned their backs on e-books. I surely don't want to read a mystery on my computer screen or some other electronic instrument. On…

Guppies: A school of—and for—emerging writers

by guest blogger Elizabeth Zelvin

Sisters in Crime was the first organization I joined in 2002 when I completed the first draft of Death Will Get You Sober, the mystery manuscript I'd been talking about for years. I visited my local chapter, which was going through a lull at the time. And I signed up for Guppies, which I was told was the SinC online interest group (not yet a chapter) for the Great UnPublished, or prepublished wrtiers, as they are often called in SinC. I'm so glad I…

Ask not what SinC can do for you. . .

posted by Donna Andrews, SinC Chapter Liaison and author of the Meg Langslow & Turing Hopper mystery series.

Potential SinC members often ask what benefits they can get from joining

the organization. And most SinC members--including me--have very

decided ideas about what benefits SinC could or should offer.

But just to play devil's advocate--or possibly prove that I'm still a

child of the sixties--I'd like to suggest that we all need to shift our…

Twisted Sistahs and Bruthas of The Final Twist

One of the best, unkept secrets in Houston is The Final Twist, the Houston Chapter of Sisters in Crime, founded four years ago by Diana L. Driver, author of Ninth Lord of the Night.

Against the odds, and despite a membership scattered all over this very large and sprawling city, the chapter has grown, managing to not just survive, but to thrive.

TFT members are mostly published authors or aspiring authors--though we're proud to include in our membership a reviewer, a movie…

What's Cooking?

I had a conversation this morning with a fellow writer who was in a deep dark place with his new book. Not that he had no ideas; he had plenty. And not that he has no tools, skills, talent: this is a very gifted guy. But, he said, he was feeling like when you've decided to make soup. You know just what you're going to do: heat up some broth, chop up carrots and onions, and then to be fancy put in a little dill. Except when you go to the cupboard where the pots are, there's no saucepan. And…

Greetings from the Ohio Chapter!

Many National SinC members are fortunate enough to participate in

regional chapters. These chapters meet at different places around

the country, from Alaska to Florida, and from California to New

York. For those who aren't geographically near enough to participate

in person, there are the Internet Chapter and the Guppies. With all

of these active groups there are as many chapter personalities as

there are chapters. Some are mostly made up of writers, some mostly…

You didn't know this but all of you were with us at the Malice Domestic conference this past weekend. As Sisters in Crime celebrated their 20th Anniversary all weekend the energy from members was incredible. We thank all of you for your participation in Sisters in Crime.

SinC did have their traditional breakfast kicked off by Parnell Hall with the short version of the Sisters in Crime song. To view lyrics go to…

A Personal Invitation to Sisters in Crime’s Forensic University of St. Louis

One day last fall, Michelle Becker and I reviewed the forensic sessions we'd attended at several writers' conferences. The classes were good—but the information often covered the same ground twice or left gaping holes. What we needed was a conference dedicated to solely to forensics.…

What SinC Can Do For You!

At a Sisters in Crime library event a couple of weeks ago, a woman

approached me and asked: "But what does Sisters in Crime DO for you?"

Fair enough question, so here goes. Twenty years ago, a small group of

women, most famously led by Sara Paretsky, realized there was a problem with

equitable treatment of women crime fiction writers. They decided to shine a

light on the issue and the SinC organization has been dedicated to that ever

since.

With our… Continue

What Sisters In Crime Can Offer Libraries

The stereotypical "shushing," staid, prim and proper librarian is a portrait from the past. Many librarians are into murder, mayhem and other dastardly deeds. Sisters in Crime helps feed this addiction to things felonious, criminal and psychotic through the pages of the many crime novels and non-fiction books written by its members.

It was wonderful to discover that Sisters in Crime was open, not only to writers of my favorite genre, but welcoming to fans…
