No Rest For the Wicked

I hit my deadline, but there hasn't been much time t relax since Tuesday. Here's a quick overview

First of all, I had to cancel my book trailer shoot over the weekend because

the owner of the location was stuck behind the flaming truck pile up on

the 5 freeway. I'm in the process of rescheduling but it looks like it

won't be until the second week of November at the earliest.

I did an interview for Publishers Weekly yesterday. I felt pretty good about the

written… Continue

The Wire

As

in getting down to it. There’s a week left until my latest deadline.

Six days, actually, since I will be shooting my book trailer on

Saturday and probably won’t get much else accomplished that day. This

deadline’s for another ghost project. Literary Black Ops. If I told you

about it, I’d have to kill you. You know the drill.

Anyway, today was a nice solid 4K day. Normally I take Mondays off, if by “off” you mean using the time to do all those…

ARCs are in!

I just received a box of MONEY SHOT advanced reading copies. Man are they pretty! I can’t get over seeing that Richard Prather blurb in actual print. (Is he really talking about me?!?) To be honest, it never seemed real until now.

You know what I really hate?

When Monica Bellucci plays a lactating prostitute and doesn’t show her tits. Or any serious nudity at all for that matter.

Went to a screening of Shoot Em Up last night. Interestingly enough, I was up for the novelization of this movie and didn’t get the gig. Anyone know if a novelization was done at all?

As for the film, it’s exactly what you think. My Hoodtown publisher Keith Rainville and I had a sort of Siskel and Ebert disagreement about it. Keith flat out hated it. I… Continue

Preproduction, Gonzaga’s Nose and Bulletproof Babies

I spent some time today scoping out my location for the book trailer and messing around with lights. I’m hardly any kind of cinematographer, so I wanted time to experiment and test my ideas and make mistakes before I actually have Roxy on set. I’m hoping that way, when it comes time to shoot the real deal maybe I’ll have a little bit more of a clue.

Inspired by Gonzaga’s lovely broken nose from last night’s UFC, I’ve been considering bloodying Roxy up a bit when I toss her in the… Continue

Lovin Leo Lions

Happy Birthday (late) to Sonambulo creator and pinche artboy Rafael Navarro and (early) to that saucy vixen Maria Alexander. (Anyone who got the Harvey Sid Fisher reference in the title should be ashamed of themselves. I know I am.)

Decidedly Disliking Dexter

I’ve never seen the television show, but a friend recently lent me the first two books about the lovable blood spatter analyst who moonlights as a killer of serial killers. Entertainingly written, great premise, and buckets of innovative gore, but I thought there were a few too many staggering coincidences holding the plot together. Plus I’m having a bit of trouble with the title character.

My problem is this. Dexter is presented as totally amoral and without emotion, yet he… Continue

Master of Men!

OK, I really need this:

(Why I was able to make the link thing work last time and not this time is beyond me.)

I love that they did both the earlier, suave classic Wentworth version and the more demented, fanged later version.

Meanwhile I’ve suddenly got galleys aplenty here at the House of Faust. Galleys for MONEY SHOT and for HELL OF A WOMAN, the new antho from Busted Flush, are both awaiting… Continue

Hoodtown, The Movie

Because I want to be cool like Duane Swierczynski, you can click here to read my entry on a group blog where writers talk about who they would cast in film adaptations of their novels.

Angel Hunt

Do you look like this?

Know someone who does?

The hunt is on. I’m looking for a model/actress to play Angel Dare in

the book trailer I will be shooting for MONEY SHOT. If you’re LA local

and interested in being a star (for thirty seconds), check out my craiglist ad for more details.

Is it me, or the air-conditioning?

Yesterday’s panel “How to Write a Mystery” went well. There was a surprisingly large crowd. (I like to

think it was my fabulousness and not just people trying to escape the

heat and spend a few hours in an air-conditioned room with free coffee

and cookies.) I managed to pull off a very convincing impersonation of

someone who knows what she’s talking about. All and all it was a lot of

fun.

I also got in a nice Crimespace plug when asked to recommend… Continue

Americanization and why I (heart) Ray Banks

I’ve been reading lots of British authors lately and it’s got me wondering about the whole Americanization debate. The claim that the average American reader can’t handle unfamiliar British spellings and books by Brits ought to be “Americanized” in order to sell to the McDonalds and Starbucks set.

Well, if the average American reader can’t cope with words like “tyre” or “kerb,” they’d probably be utterly mystified by Ray Banks’ Cal Innes novels. Which is a shame, because they’re… Continue

The Violent World of Parker

When I read on Lisa Morton's blog that a collector had unloaded a large number of vintage Westlake/Stark books at The Iliad bookshop, I knew I was doomed. In spite of my overdeveloped sense of birthday entitlement, I refrained from going completely hogwild with the credit card. I fondled and cooed and lusted over many rare signed editions, but in the end I walked away with a stack of three more modestly priced prizes. A signed movie edition of THE OUTFIT (now the smash MGM movie starring Robert… Continue

Rescue Me

Sorry for the delay in posting. It’s been crazy busy around the House of Faust. What else is new?

Anyway, the No Crime Unpublished Conference was a blast. It started off with a bang when I got tied up and rigged into a litter (y’know, that metal thing they lay injured people in to pull them up out of ravines with a helicopter) by the Montrose Search and Rescue team. They had great equipment, including all sorts of rope and climbing gear. (drool) Of course, it was also a fun and… Continue

This is Awesome!

After two years in print, I finally got a HOODTOWN review in Wrestling Observer! I finally feel legit.

Best line:

“This is a book, if a group of us were to read together, would undoubtedly elicit that spontaneous chant,

This is Awesome!”

I know maybe three people out there will get that but I’m tickled pink. After all, they could be chanting “You fucked up!”
