In thinking of the upcoming holiday weekend I found this marvelous quote from a guy named Douglas Pagels. He said that sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold. But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow.

But here's a more objective, scientific view. If all the cars in the United States were placed end to end... well, it would probably be Labor Day Weekend. So spend the long weekend at home relaxing with those who mean the most.

I couldn't agree more. When I was in Belgium, the whole country took off the month of August, except for those groups you mentioned. It was eerie at first, but then I thought - gee, nothing broke. The country went on. We could get one day!

I have long felt the American economy could survive if a few days were set aside for people to be at home, or doing whatever they wanted. Everyone would be off, except for emergency services (police, fire, hospitals, EMTs), the entertainment industry (sports, concerts, movies, etc.) and entertainment and travel support positions (hotels, gas stations, towing services). Everyone else gets the day off. (The people noted above, well, I'm sorry, but that's the line of work you're in: you work when other people are off.)

Given its roots, Labor Day would be perfect for such a day. There are a few others, but Labor Day is perfect. Of course, I'm the guy who thinks all veterans should get Veterans Day off.
