I'm still trying to climb out of a massive reading slump so no books to write about. So the first blog will be about how Chance came to be living in Michigan. Chance was originally from northern Georgia. Our best guess is that he was hit by a car or a truck. The radial nerve from the right front leg to the spine was severed. The right foot was pulverized. All the ribs on the right side were cracked. The right back femur was broken in half. None of his injuries were ever treated. I can not begin to imagine how this little guy lived when for some period of time he would have been unable to stand up at all. I also can not imagine how the owner could watch all that pain and do nothing about it. I sincerely hope there is a special corner of hell with his name on it. But I digress.

About a year after the accident, said owner apparently decided a functionally three legged beagle was not going to be able to hunt. So off he was shipped to a kill shelter. A very kind hearted young couple with a newly established animal sanctuary outside of Cincinnati heard about him and drove down to Georgia to rescue him. They believed no-one would want a beagle with a withered leg that more closely resembled a chicken wing. But they also believed he deserved a better life that he had so far experienced.

I saw Chance's picture (the one to the left) on Petfinder.com. Within a week my daughter and I were driving down to Cincinnati to bring him home. My only concern was whether Chance would be fearful or skittish. He certainly was entitled. Instead, he considers a stranger to be someone who has yet to rub his belly. Apparently my bed was the first he's ever been on. While most beagles like to stay outside as much as possible to sniff whatever is in range, Chance only gets off the bed when he absolutely has to. Life is about food and pillows and snuggles. And I adore him.
