There's so much I haven't read in all of crime fiction, and I love the look of the new reprints of Upfield's work.

But, you know, just because something is important doesn't automatically mean it works well as a story or entertainment. And we all have our personal tastes.

That's the problem with classics. I've often heard them defined as books we feel we ought to read but don't actually want to read.

Daniel - I'll wait with baited breath to see what you think of Upfield. I'm a heretic - I don't like his books, and I've spent a large part of my life explaining that it's not political correctness gone crazy on my part. Goodness knows I've been told by more people than you can poke a stick at that I'm a fool for failing to understand the full importance of a half-caste character (who I still maintain could just have easily been full blood and made him a statement in line with the author's stated aims and supposed beliefs and not a cop-out to societal expectations).

Patricia - Patricia Carlon is an Australian - it's an interesting story that one because mostly she remained pretty well unknown in Australia - which must have been very frustrating.

Colman - NZ definitely counts as far as http://www.austcrimefiction.org is concerned. If you like Paul Thomas there's a book around by Paul Cleave which you might want to check out.

Wasn't Patricia Carlon Austrailian? I think so and I read her books whenever I run across one in a used book store.

Do I read Aussie books? Sure I do. Peter Temple, Peter Corris, William Gott so far. Got a Leigh Redhead in waiting, and I'm hoping to get round to some Garry Disher, Gabrielle Lord, and Arthur Upfield.

And that's just for starters. So many books, so few eyeballs...
