Bernie Rhodenbarr is a professional burglar who has been hired to procure a blue, leather box from the desk of a off-Broadway producer. The job is not without problems; first, there’s no blue box; second, he’s caught by the police and; third, there’s a dead body in the bedroom.

As long as one doesn’t have a problem with the protagonist being a burglar, this is a clever, light series with a real sense of New York City, fully developed characters, and crisp dialogue. I would recommend reading the series in order. If you’re looking for a quick, light read, these fill the bill.
