I've been saving up news for my debut blog post. First, my crime/horror/metaphysical thrller, Bad Thoughts, is now out. Second, I just sold two more books to Serpent's Tail. Here's the Publishers Marketplace announcement my intrepid agent, Sara Crowe, put out for it:

SMALL CRIMES author Dave Zeltserman's PARIAH, about a member of South Boston's Irish mob who commits a kidnapping gone very wrong and is later paid to write a fictionalized account of the crime, along with a second book, KILLER, about a mob hit man in Boston who made a deal to get less time and is now forced to confront the ghosts in his past, as well as the men he ratted on, to Pete Ayrton at Serpent's Tail, by Sara Crowe at Harvey Klinger, (world English).

I can't tell you all how happy I am about this. My first book, Fast Lane, took 12 years to sell, my second, Bad Thoughts, took 9 years (although it was hidden away in a drawer for most of that time), Small Crimes took 3 years, and Pariah and Killer both less than a year. This is the dream--the breakthrough that I've been working for years to achieve--to be able to sell my books quickly to a top publisher. What's also very cool about this (at least to me) is that my three Serpent's Tail books are going to be sold as a loosely-themed "Badass out of prison" trilogy. Small Crimes opens with a disgraced ex-cop being released from County Jail. He had caused a lot of damage before going to jail, and now that he's out he wants to slide through life without causing any more. With Pariah I thought it would be interesting to show a different path from prison. In that one my protagonist is a force of nature--someone who leaves a wake of death and destruction wherever he goes. With Killer it seemed to make sense to continue this theme. The best part of this, I can't think of a better publisher for these books than Serpent's Tail. Anyway, now it's going to be torture waiting for these books to come out, especially Pariah which I think has a chance of getting attention--partly because of its South Boston Mob angle, and partly because of how subversive the book is.

More news. I've been hanging around the most excellent site, Murderati, a lot lately, first guest blogging about my 15 year journey through 3 books and 4+ publishers and then going toe-to-toe with the ultra-talented and cool, Mike MacLean (for proof of that, check out his McHenry's Gift in 2006 BAMS or his equally excellent story, Coyote's Ballard, in Hardluck). During our interview I get to spout off about a bunch of stuff, including Bad Thoughts, martial arts, and the future of crime fiction on the web.
