NAs a true crime writer, I interact a great deal with law enforcement and prosecutors. I only write about criminals who have been convicted, and those whose convictions have been affirmed on appeal. I have met some wonderful police officers, especially those who work Homicide or, as they call it in some cities, Major Crimes Division. Sadly, I have also interacted with dishonest corrupt characters with no regard for the law, let alone law enforcement. It is not easy for a police department to get rid of a "bad cop" -- especially if the police department doesn't have an Internal Affairs department, or if illegal and predatory actions are intentionally overlooked or even condoned by the department. This is one reason why I so admire good cops. It is not easy being an honest cop when there are so many temptations and pressures to be a manipulative power crazed jerk. People are afraid of the police, even during a simple traffic stop. And, if you have ever been pulled over by a "bad cop" you know that fear. Here is some information and advice about dealing with police officers in the USA....and remember NEVER LIE TO A COP and NEVER TOUCH ONE! * Police are not allowed to frisk for anything except weapons. If, during a weapons pat, an officer discovers something 'suspicious' you don't have to show it to them. Although the police have been given a lot of leeway to 'check for weapons', the Supreme Court has ruled that a weapons search may not be used as a pretext for a more general search. * Police are not allowed to search everyone Sometimes police tell people to 'empty your pockets' or they pat everyone down as they are leaving a raided party -- you know, the neighbors called the cops to complain about the noise. The cops most likely dont have any kind of judge signed search warrant. In these cases, most searches will be citizens 'voluntarily' complying with requests except in the case of violence, extreme intoxication, or obvious criminal activity. Be polite and considerate of the difficult job the cops have, but do not consent to any warrantless search. * BE POLITE. Always be very polite and respectful of the law enforcement officer, but remember...the best way to wave the flag is to never waive your rights.
