Authors´ Guild vs. reality: Kindles and read-aloud

http://www.boingboing.net/2009/02/25/authors-guild-vs-rea.html

From the article:

"I think there's plenty not to like about the Kindle -- the DRM, the proprietary file format, both imposed on authors and publishers even if they don't want it -- and about Amazon's real audiobook section, Audible (the DRM -- again, imposed on authors and publishers even if they'd prefer not to use it). But if there's one thing Amazon has demonstrated, it's that it plans on selling several bazillion metric tons of audiobooks. They control something like 90 percent of the market. To accuse them of setting out to destroy it just doesn't pass the giggle-test."

I saw somewhere recently that the technology to produce realistic sound (not to be distinguished from a human voice reading) is in progress. When that happens, Kindle 2 will already be set to take over the audio market. The big problem is that most authors (and publishers) think they've sold one format, but suddenly they have also lost another without payment. It will mean, I suspect, that any book that is out in Kindle will not be able to sell its audio rights. As for electronic rights, they are held by print publishers who can pass them on to Kindle if they wish.

I don't know about any lawsuits, but there might be. How is Amazon forcing anyone to do anything? If you don't like it, don't sell your stuff on Amazon.

A number of publishers, I suspect, think Amazon is out to control the audio, ebook market by forcing everything thru them. Isn't there a law suit going on with several small publishers sueing Amazon?
