Graphic Novel Friday The Helm Jim Hardison

I grabbed this graphic novel because of the cover and the catch phrase on the cover that said” What if you had a magical superpower and it hated your guts?” I just had to
read it. The read was fun, funny, unpredictable, and totally a farce. This was
a good time; you should give this graphic novel a try. The whole story revolves
around a loser named Matt Blurdy, an overweight, 30 year old movie rental clerk
that still lives in the basement of his overbearing mother. To believe what is
contained in the pages I think that you need to get the blurb from the back
cover, because this is just one original graphic novel with a sincere mind and
plotline of its own:

“Matt Blurdy’s day has gone from crap to worse. Not only did his girlfriend break his heart at work-and in front of all the video –store patrons- but he just got fired. All that’s left to do is minibike his sorry,
thirty- year-old, unemployed butt back home to his mom’s basement and drown his
sorrows in a bucket of extra-crispy chicken while contemplating where his life
went wrong.

But on the way home, Matt decides to quiet his aching heart with a brief detour to a garage sale. When an ancient looking helmet calls to him as “The Chosen One” exhorting him to don the mantle of the “Valhalladrim”,
Matt touches it with trembling fingers- and is jolted by raw magical power.
Holy crap! Is he going to be a superhero? Is this why he always felt special
even when everyone else thought he was a loser! The Helm gets a sense of whom
it’s dealing with. Suddenly, it changes its tune: “I was mistaken. You are not
the chosen one, Good Day.” But for once in his life, Matt’s not taking no for
an answer. Not today.”

I got to read this on the beach and I know that added to my enjoyment, but I don’t think I am that off base with this totally off base graphic novel. It was just too much fun following this guy around with the Helm
totally trying to insult him every step of the way. I enjoyed watching Matt’s
transformation and success; I enjoyed the constant insults thrown his way and
his total lack of understanding and caring. It is fun to root for the underdog
and laugh along the way. I applaud Jim Hardison’s originality in plotline and
dialogue. The artwork jived with the storyline and didn’t over power it, and it
flowed nicely. Hopefully I will be able to find more of The Helm and get to read
some more of the witty dialogue like- “
Ignore the Harlot” or “ You throw like a woman, you swollen ,prancing, dawdler!
Again.”
