HANDS UP, VARMINTS! Let’s talk “GUNS

One of the most interesting groups that I belong to is an on-line collection of Crime-Writers who gather on something called “CrimeSpace”. The group was developed by a man by the name of Daniel Hatadi, whom I consider to be nothing short of brilliant. Here, writers from all over the world get together virtually to discuss everything from ‘plotting’ to ‘character development’ to ‘manuscript marketing’.

Recently a question was raised on the group’s Forum that sparked a great deal of discussion. The “conversation” took a number of turns, and at one point it became a friendly debate on the issue of ‘gun-control’. READ MORE...

I've been writing a western lately, and I did a lot of research on firearms at the time, and I decided that since the gun is such an important motif, I gave each character a different and in some cases, unusual gun that reflects them in some way.

All those pent up aggressions - ha ha! That's why I kill so many characters...

Plus, I've had a lot of fun target shooting. It is very relaxing to blast a can or paper target into oblivion.

Plus the frequent mention of the word "guns" has put an ad for a firearms training school in the sidebar.

Excellent observation, Jack. Well put, and wierdly kind of true!

I think I understand the fascination. They are kinda neat little machines, or tools, something many men and some women enjoy immensely. Plus, you can say the history of the world was written by weapons and the leaders who commanded them.

I sometimes despair over how we will break the cycle of fear in our society.
BTW -- I really enjoy reading your posts, I.J.

Well, I'm with you on this one, but I'm not American-born. I simply do not understand the attachment to guns. Add to that the fact that I don't think very many people can be trusted with a gun, plus the ready availability of them to criminals, mentally disturbed people, children, jealous husbands, severely depressed people, and nervous householders and shopowners who'll pull the trigger at the first sign of a disturbance, and you can see that I live in fear for myself and my family.

Absolutely agree on Daniel's brilliance. :)
