Oh, the "why" is crucial. It's the one question I used to teach beginning literature students to ask of any piece of writing, and any detail in it. The answers are totally enlightening for the meaning of the work/intention of the author.

I have to admit that, thinking about it, the question of where I get my ideas haven't come from other writers, but rather family and friends who have difficulty understanding waht makes this church-going soccer Mom get up early in the morning to pen murder. Writers already know that answer to that question.
