Honesty IS the best policy, but you never want to hurt a person's feelings. As a writer I've learned how to be honest AND kind. Wardrobe disaster? I say, "You do have a style all your own." Ugly child? "Wow, that's some baby!" My rule: If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.
