My short story, “Wishing on Whores,” has been nominated for the Spinetingler Award for Best Short Story on the Web!

The Spinetingler Award is given annually by Spinetingler Magazine. Their objective is to generate awareness of quality fiction, and to take note of the contributions made at all levels of the mystery publishing industry. Awards are given in several categories, including Best Novel by a New Voice, Best Novel by a Rising Star and Best Novel by a Legend. Other nominees this year include Lawrence Block, Christa Faust, Joe R. Lansdale, Allan Guthrie, Ray Banks and Dennis Lehane.

Nominees are agreed upon by a panel of judges and winners are determined by public voting.

But wait, there’s more!

“Wishing on Whores” has also been nominated for a Derringer Award for Best 1,001 to 4,000 Word Mystery Story of 2008!

The Short Mystery Fiction Society created the annual Derringer Award for excellence in the field of short stories in 1997. The name “Derringer,” after the palm-sized handgun, was chosen as a metaphor for a crime short story -- small, but dangerous. The Derringer was created to fill a void in the arena of American mystery awards, which tend to concentrate on novels. Any story published (in print or online) in a given calendar year is eligible for a Derringer.

This is my fourth Derringer nomination. I was nominated previously in 2003 for my short story “Shark Infested Pudding,” in 2006 for my short story “Twilight of the Fireflies” and in 2008 my short story “In the Shadows of Wrigley Field” won for Best 1,001 to 4,000 Word Mystery Story of 2007.

“Wishing on Whores” appeared November 2008 in Issue 178 of THIEVE’S JARGON.
