Those early John Woo movies changed the way I thought about crime fiction, both in film and in books. Love the pic too.
  • Paul Guyot

I'm pretty sure that's a shot from THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS, right? A film which I happen to share screen credit with Yun-Fat. Um, he's at the top and I'm buried down under the Dolly Grip, but it's still a life highlight for me.
  • Steve Allan

It is THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS, which was a pretty good movie. Paul, that's pretty cool that you worked on the movie. What other films have you worked on? I'm a big movie geek. I really wish Woo would get back to making better movies.

Nikki, the gun is just a precaution. Who knows what kind of riff raff will show up.
  • Paul Guyot

I was Yun-Fat's personal assistant for that movie and for part of THE CORRUPTOR. He's amazing. He's actually the guy I credit with finally giving me that kick in the ass to get me to be a writer - instead of just talking about writing.
  • Laura Benedict

Total riff-raff here, just stopping by to say thanks for the friendship. An MFA in popular fiction? How cool is that?! I love Jenny Siler--we have the same editor.

Uh, you don't look Scottish at all. Wow.
  • Steve Allan

So, what's up with the friends thing? And why am I obsessed with collecting as many as I can? They should have degress of friends: Bob IS YOUR FRIEND, who will help you move; Dan IS YOUR FRIEND, who will help you move a body. And I love it when you see your avator and the site is so happy to say THIS IS YOU! Exclamation point. Too funny.
  • Steve Allan

And another thing about the friends: has anyone declined a friend request. "No, fuck you, I don't want to be your friend. Find someone else's leg to hump."
  • Mary L. Wheeling

As Tom Reagan says, "Friendship's got nothin to do with it." Hump away.
  • Laura Benedict

I have personally declined several friend requests this week. They were definitely NOT Crimespace people, though they were not as bad as the foot-fetish guy on myspace.

Recently finished Laura Lippman's new "What the Dead Know." Terrific!
  • Steve Allan

I didn't know there were non-crimespace people snooping around. Oh well, it's not like they're going to ask for a job reference or anything? Or are they?
  • Lynette Hall Hampton

Thanks collecting me as a friend, Steve. I think I'm going to like this place.
  • Steve Allan

Hey, I'm hoping everyone will be my friend - except the guy who wanted to be my mortgage agent. What's up with that?
  • Angie

Howdy, Steve. Hey, did you write The Killing in Spinetingler a ways back? Just wonderin'...
  • Tiffany Leigh

I'm battle-tested on MySpace with the friendspam, but this site I hope skews a bit older -- cos, you know, the MySpace Can't Read...

Thanks for adding me. I love that you are a Bangorian -- I have some family and roots in mid-coast Maine.
  • Steve Allan

Angie, Wow, you remembered that story? It's one of my favorites actually. I workshopped the story with Dennis Lehane, so some of the credit belongs to him.

    Tiffany, where in Maine?
  • Steve Allan

Man, I've been humping a lot of leg around here. So, if we collect enough friends, do we win something? I think we should win something.
  • Newt Love

    Hau,

Hey there, I wish I knew more Passamaquoddy than I do. All my dad ever taught me were dirty words. It's kinda like the only Spanish and French that I remember from school. But I'm learning more since I work for an Indian center at the University of Maine.

I came THIS close to making the move to Bangor back in '99. My sig-other at the time Donna & I even had it narrowed down to a choice between three dif apartments. Two near downtown & one really nice one just over in Brewer.
But, fate intervened & our 8 year relationship ended right around the time we ( the two of us & our two kids ) were supposed to be packing up our apartment for the trip. Then, I met my wife Vicki, we had our daughter & I haven't been to Maine since.

I've GOT to get up there soon though & I still long to live up there someday.
  • Meriah Crawford

Steve, nice picture. Odd, but I don't remember you looking anywhere *near* that handsome when I saw you last. ;-P
  • Steve Allan

Yeah, because in real life I'm much better looking than Chow Yun-Fat.
  • Kathryn Lilley

Hi Steve, thanks for the invite! As a kid, I spent a couple of summers in Maine (Lake Damariscotta, don't know if I'm remembering how to spell it right!). It's a wonderful area and people.
