Chandler, of course, and current guys such as Victor Gischler. I still have huge gaps in my reading, and am only reading The Postman Always Rings Twice for the first time.

    Well, we live and we die. Some get killed. Actually you can give quite a good argument that the first crime novel was written by a norwegian. Mauritz Hansen: The murder of Machinebuilder Rolfsen (1839) - But it's stretching it a bit, I think. Poe did something completely different with the mystery and investigation in Rue Morgue. - Still we have some good writers, and some bad killers. If you're looking for the first kind, try Jo Nesbø, Kjell Ola Dahl and Karin Fossum.
