Profile Information

Munising, Michigan
About Me:
After a couple stints in Viet Nam, I went to Michigan State U. and came out with a minor in journalism. I've written for newspapers and magazines until going free-lance, my gosh, almost twenty years ago.
WHOO???, was released on July 1, about a murdering bunch of scoundrals that my intrepid reporter must track down. I will complete the re-write of Escape From Little Alcatraz, my first novel, by summer's end.
I Am A:
Reader, Writer
Books And Authors I Like:
Elmore Leonard--Follows me to Florida & Michigan
Carl Hiaasen---If I could write characters like his
John Sanford---Ditto. Although his early stuff was more tense.
Robert Crais---Gotta love wise-cracking P.I.'s & Joe Pike
Loren D. Estleman--Best kept secret in hard-boiled reading.
Robert Parker--Rediscovered him through Stone & his westerns.
Movies And TV Shows I Like:
McMurtrey's stuff-though I didn't see Broke Back Mountain

My dad had a fishin' buddy--name a John Voelker-aka, Robert Traver.
As a puppy I watched Jimmy Stewart, Lee Remick, George C. Scott, Ben Gazzara, Arthur O'Connel, Eve Arden, Kathryn Grant, and Otto Preminger exit the Marquette County Courthouse after a day of filming.
I guess you could say that Robert Traver was an early influence. He wrote a bunch of other novels, most hilarious accounts of the U.P.
Robert Traver wrote Anatomy of a Murder. I forgot to inject that.

You gotta love 'em & you gotta hate 'em. Our readers pretty much don't want blase'-cliche' or perfect.

Here are two hitmen from Deetroit I learned to love.

From WHOO??

Fisher answered the first knock. Two men stood there as different as night and day. The one doing the rapping stood at least six foot one, and about two hundred and fifty pounds of hard fat. He held a permanent sneer and a cold stogie on his lips. He chewed at the layers of brown tobacco and looked… Continue

Just Write

September 3---Labor Day

I found myself lurking at a writer site, supposed to emphasize crime & mystery. But alas, the stress was on inside bickering and petty misunderstandings.

So let's---Just Write

If there is really a good book out there that you want to read, but—it hasn’t been written yet, then go ahead and write it.

Crime novelist Eugene Izzi’s death remains his most famous mystery. He was found hanging outside the window of his office… Continue

What's Up?

I dropped the bottle of scotch trhee times---count 'em 1-2-3.

I have written for thirty years, omg, it's been thirty years! Without dropping a jug of Scotch. Now, my life is over. I am about to deliver a fictional novel that includes excerpts from the National Police Gazette.

My quandry is; James Ellroy has a working title called the 'Police Gazette'-- -I just learned this today.

Will this cause my publisher to reject the project---or will it be a blessing in… Continue

Hey kiddo,

Bouchercon was good. Glad I went. I have three local signings and Sleuthfest at the end of February. Doing research for a sequel in Alaska in July. Life is good, some day I'll make some money. Ha!

Hi Reece,

Also my first Bouchercon. Been to three Sleuthfests but they occur here in my home state. Will look for you in Indy.

Hi Dennis -- I'm looking forward to reading Road Dogs. Leonard writes the best dialogue in the business. I'm also going to be at Bouchercon (my first). Maybe I'll see you there. Reece

Gotcha Kiddo,

I think I mentioned we built a summer place in the Upper Cumberlands in Tennessee, east of Nashville. So I'll drift up 65 from there, stop outside of Indy Thursday night, then jog on in for morning donuts. We probably bump into each other some place along the way. Are you on any panels? I was so uncertain about the time so I didn't dare commit. Any time Saturday is cool. I'll go into sleuth mode and track you down.

I'm flying in to BCon on the 14th. And I'm staying at the conference hotel. I've got an evening thing with my publisher on Friday night, but would love to see you on Sat sometime. Let me know what works.

Huh? I went to the store. Took me away from my vices. But, I brought home a case a Scotch. So---I'm back to writing.

BTW, I'm clearing the decks for Bouchercon. I thinks me be there.
