Sorry for the absence. Just haven't really had time to read anything crimeish lately - been focusing on porn and erotica for a book (or actually two; I have an anthology of vintage Finnish porn writing coming out).

I'm translating one of the most important debuts in American crime writing in Finnish, though. I'll be posting about this soon in every venue I can think of, but now it's still very much hush-hush.

As for films, I watched Plunder of the Sun by John Farrow from a David Dodge novel and Man in the Vault by a director whose name I can't recall at the mo', from a novel by Frank Gruber. (Is it by Andrew McLaglen, the Western director? Perhaps.) Both quite solid B or B-ish films, heartily recommended. Plunder of the Sun was highly better of the two, though, vivid and hardboiled.

Hi Juri, nice to see you back. Completely understand how busy you've been - drop by when you can and let us know the scoop on this translation project!

Actually, I don't think there's any real difference between porn and erotica - or if there is, it's that "erotica" is something more pretentious. "Porn", in literature, written word, is honest and down-to-earth, "erotica" is something like Nicholson Baker's Vox or Stephen Vicinczey's memoirs. Boring, boring, boring!

Hey Jack, "I the Juri" will probably be my memoir when I get there! (No reason, though, why I couldn't be writing it now. Who's been the youngest person to write his/her memoirs?)

Juri--

Thanks for coming back. Have you ever thought of writing a book called, "I the Juri?" I know how it's pronounced, I just happened to have an evil streak.

I guess we'll see more posts on Rara_Avis too.

An easily understood absence. One can get far too caught up in these things and have little time for anything worthwhile else. I can think of little better to focus on in any event, than porn and/or erotica - I've never been really sure what, if anything, the difference was, it's of no matter to me. I'm very curious as to the book you're translating.
