I'm New to This Business of Writing a Blog...

...mostly because I don't think I have all that much intelligent to say on any regular basis. I do, however, like to read mystery novels. I just finished Craig Johnson's new novel, "Kindness Goes Unpunished," after seeing Craig (again) at a book signing. Interesting guy, who is very quiet about the fact that he more than just a cowboy who used to be a cop. He has a Ph.D. in playwriting. He commented that the difference in speaking styles of his various characters (a very profane Vic, a Henry who never uses contractions, a laconic Walt, etc.) was his way of avoiding using "he said" and "she said" in his novels. Characters in a play have to have their own voice without those helps (though of course the audience can see who's speaking, or someone reading the script can see the name of the character before the lines!) That's something I'll have to think about as I write. I'll be posting other reviews later--suffice it to say I enjoyed "Kindness Goes Unpunished" enough to read it through a second time, to catch all the details I missed the first time.
