I’ll spend Sunday in Kensington, MD, celebrating the International Day of the Book. From noon to 5 pm the town's Howard Avenue becomes a literary street festival. Planned activities include free rare book evaluations at the Kensington Row Bookshop, chess games against an international master, local storytellers, and the live appearance of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. About 40 local authors (including yours truly) will give live readings, and probably twice as many will be on hand for book signings.
To honor books as physical objects of beauty, artists will demonstrate metalpoint drawing, metal embossing and wire art. You can make your own book art and create a tiny book, learn to create media collages. Or just relax and watch a comic skit and listen to a variety of live music. If you love books, in any form, this should be a blast!
