Hi, Jeff! Wow! So you certainly have some experience in the whole Watergate milieu. It's always fascinated me, I must say, if only as a study in psychology. And of course I see parallels between Nixon and Macbeth. "When the president does it, it's not illegal." That seems like something the dark thane would say. :)
The theme of ambition and morality is certainly as compelling today as it was back in Elizabethan times. Except today it's a nuclear world. Thanks for your comment, Julia.
No Robert, I don't think so. I found my message on your page. But, anyway, here's what I said:
Hi Robert,
Can't wait to read "Three Strikes You’re Dead." From the description I can tell I'll love the book, 1938 Chicago, the Cubs, the mob, and Al Capone. My God! its got it all. Hey, the '38 Cubs had a 3rd baseman named Stan Hack. I'd met him when I was a kid and he was the manger of the old L. A. Angles, the minor league team owned by Phil Wrigley. In the mid-fifties, I used to sneak into the old Los Angeles Wrigley Field and sit with the players in the dugout. After about a half dozen games Stan Hack figured out I wasn't one of the players' kids, and gave me the boot. Even though the Dodgers moved to L. A. in 1958 I'm still a Cubs fan.
I retrieved your earlier message after all. In it, you mentioned Stan Hack, who played 3rd base for the Cubs for many years. Thought you'd be interested to know that he makes an appearance (non-speaking) in "Three Strikes You're Dead" in a scene in the Cubs clubhouse following the second game of the 1938 New York-Chicago World Series.
Hi - Thanks for the warm welcome. Loved your web site And since "It's a Wonderful Life" is one of my all time favorite movies, I grinned as I read through your wonderful life as well. Your series sounds intriguing - I'll definitely check it out. Anyone who lists Dashiell Hammett as one of their favorite authors is on the right track! Thanks again for the welcome - Evelyn (www.evelyndavid.com)
Hey Jeff - I was just in NB this past weekend. Had lunch at the Chart House. The YL Star is one of the community papers through the OC Register. My column is mostly human interest/humor, but I do reviews when a book strikes me worthy. Which I can only imagine yours will :) Look for my review of STIGMA on Thursday, April 12 if you have the chance.
Thanks for your post about "The Black Dahlia." You lived in the neighborhook, so I'm sure that, even though you were five, those things have stayed with you. I can imagine the murder of James Elroy's mother in a similar fashion has stayed with him as well.
Jeff, Greet seeing you at LA Fest of Books, and great pic up on your website (that's actually Daniel Woodrell in the pic with the two of us) Talk to you soon! J
Thanks Jason. I posted a new picture that Keith Raffel sent to me. I know I got the names right on this one. I glanced at Daniel Woodrell's name tag just after the picture was taken. I can write, but, I guess, I cant read. Karen Syed also pointed out my mistake.
Jeff, You are doing such a wonderful job setting up mystery panels for Sisters in Crime down in the O.C. And you have a new contract for your terrific Jimmy O'Brien series. All the best, my dear.
