Noir Nation aims to create a journal of crime fiction supported by an interactive community-building Web site. The Web site will also feature short original works of film noir.
The magazine will be professionally edited and designed so that readers can engage immediately with the writing and art and the ideas they convey rather than having to overcome natty typos and badly formatted paragraphs that slow the velocity of their enjoyment.
Why crime noir? There is currently no periodic publication on an international scale satisfying readers' hunger for works of well-wrought literary fiction that explore the dark side of human experience, and that does so while pursuing its own aesthetic ends, rather than the legitimate but sometimes competing interests of the marketing departments of commercial publishing houses.
Edgar Allen Poe, Vidocq, Franz Kafka, Émile Gaboriau, Georges Simenon, Léo Malet, Dashiell Hammett, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Dorothy L. Sayers, W.R. Burnett, Leigh Brackett, Raoul Whitfield, Didier Daeninkx, Fred Vargas,Dorothy B. Hughes, Nathanael West, Marcia Muller, James M.Cain, Sara Paretsky, Raymond Chandler, Philip K.Dick, Willaim Gibson
Alan, opening Noir Nation with such a great invitation to writers adds spice and challenge and fun to the time I spend in CrimeSpace, and . . . to my writing life. This dialogue is one that I've awaited--it seems--my whole life. It's long overdue; it is. I'm shapening my pencil now and can't wait to get my hands on the first issue! Woot! (Now back to the forum).
Eddie, I'm catching up . . . checkin' in. How are the responses to your contest? Any from CrimeSpace? I like the $25 honoraria: it would let me expense off a couple of things this year. One question: is the contest still open?
I can't imagine a more beautifully foreign concept for me than 'family cotton farm'. Sort of like 'villa in the south of Italy." Very romantic to a girl north of the border. Hope the tornado damage was not severe.
Thanks Alan, I will see if I can come up with some stories for you and spread the word. I just read about Noir Nation and it sounds fantastic. Love the interactive side of things.
I have been thinking of submitting some shorts to magazines. Definitely interested in writing something for Noir Nation. How do you feel about humour in your crime fiction?
Hi Alan, Have posted about Noir Nation on Facebook (also liked your page) and Twitter (am following you and would appreciate a follow back - I'm jenthom72). I'll also post it on my blog http://ramblingsofafrustratedcrimewriter.blogspot.com later tonight when I do my update.
Hi Alan, I would like to know more about Noir Nation.Could you tell me more about it?I'm not a writer , just a reader of crime noir stories but I could spread the word.let me know....
Thanks for the message. Here at Electric Breeze we create audiobooks and Podcasts etc for publishers and authors who want to self publish utilising our audiobook packages....So as we are not a publisher we are sadly not in the position to offer any stories. However, should you or any authors here at Crimespace require audio versions of your stories at any time please feel free to contact us. We also publish a series of podcasts called 'Bookplugs' where we offer authors the opportunity to have a chapter of their work recorded and read by experienced audiobook narrators. Each podcast consists of around 5 extracts per month. Our first chapter has been doing well with downloads in the UK, Ireland, US, France, Thailand and even China to name a few. More details can be found here:
From there you can also access the first chapter with RSS via iTunes.
We are actively seeking to promote new writers and keep our costs as low as possible to accomodate and attract new writers who seek promotion via the 'Bookplugs' podcast series. Each extract costs seventy pounds sterling and will remain online and accessible for an unlimited period (a great advantage over addition to any weekly/monthly publication).
Podcasts that we produce are not just limited to our own. We also provide facilities to record and produce podcast series for third parties and organisations and can assist with setting up and streaming. This includes release via iTunes and other podcast aggregators.
Thanks for getting in contact with me. Much appreciated.
I had a little bit of a look at some of your material on the web (you don't have a website yet, yea?). I am definitely interested in maybe contributing a piece, especially given that you pay. It's not necessary to get paid but it's nice to get some compensation for ones effort.
In fact, I'm working on something now that may be up your alley, featuring a character called Max Quinlan, a Vietnamese Australian ex-cop who now makes a living finding missing people. I actually wrote an as yet unpublished novel with Quinlan set in Cambodia. Anyway there's a few details about all this on my site www.pulpcurry.com, if you have not seen it yet.
Do you have a word length that you are after in terms of stories or any other information you can send me?
Also happy to spread the word about your venture in Australia, it sounds great.
I'll be happy to put the word out about your zine. I do have a fair few crime shorts, but nearly all of them have been previously published in magazines, anthologies etc. I've assembled a few into a collection entitled 'Psychopaths Ltd: and Other Stories'. For the moment, you can read it for free at Smashwords: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/82327
Take a look. If you're interested in using any of the stories, let me know.
Thanks for letting me know about this. Can you send me some guidelines for submission? I may have some suitable stories, and will spread the word round the writers' groups I am in.
Hi, Alan. Thrilled and awed that you've put Noir Nation together so seamlessly, although I'm sure from reading your CS comments that there's been many intervening obstacles. I'll be your first fan because I respect your personal interaction, the way you've included each of us here on CS in a very personal--and personable and professional--manner. I can't wait for Issue 1.
Goin' to your site now, since I hear it's up and running.
Thanks for inviting me, but I'm not to sure if I have much to offer. I do write thrillers, but not with all the gory details, well at least not yet, contemplating, I did work for a Criminal Attorney as well as The Bellevue Police Department...maybe that's a pull.

Thanks, Alan, for the invitation. I'm currently working on a Leon Cazador story which might just be noir enough... Best of luck with #1.
