Profile Information:

Hometown:
South Royalton, Vermont, later Kfar Chabad, Israel -- go figure
About Me:
Had a normal childhood growing up in Vermont. Owned and raised twelve horses on our own land. Fishing, camping out, ski-dooing. Private pilot's license in High School.

By eighteen, I earned a Black Belt in Korean Karate, won a zillion heavyweight fighting titles, with Olympic asprations.

Got my B.A. from University of Vermont. There I became a religious Jew, and went to a rabbinical school in Israel. The athletic discipline paid off, and I became one of the first Americans ever ordained by the head rabbi of Israel.

I wrote six bestselling books on practical Talmudic law, in use worldwide.

Worked as a fulltime chaplain, a staff officer, in the Israel Prison Service for thirteen years. In 2005, at 50 years of age, I took an early retirement and published the first book ever on life inside Israel's prisons.

Titled: Israel Behind Bars, it can be seen at my site: www.rabbijacobs.com.

Everything that I write in Jewish law is immediately bought. However, I am looking for contacts in the mainstream publishing field to publish the story of the warden of my prison who was murdered by one of his own inmates.

  • Rabbi Jacobs

Okay, I just joined this and I got a message, and I don't exactly know which button I'm supposed to press. One second, I think I can figure this out. I think I just read them, and find the one which makes sense.
  • carole gill

that vet sounds like a nightmare! not perceptive! as for anyone being dangerous--well I go by the kinds of photos they put up. if they look violent--they don't become friends! but why do I think you're not afraid of anything?! and thanks about what you said about me. Yes, you're most welcome! the only odd thing I found was some friends requests at least I got--it was a one-off if you know what I mean! I accepted their request and they were gone! try to get into the FORUMS. reply to something that interests you--how about starting one yourself? go into FORUMS--choose: START A DISCUSSION and type your discussion topic, like for instance: ARE THERE ANY TRUE CRIME AUTHORS OUT THERE? see who responds and what they say. Again, welcome! enjoy it, it's fun. I tend to come on when I take a break in writing! all the best to you!!
  • Burl Barer

Rabbi -- I am an Edgar Award winning true crime author under contract to Pinnacle True Crime (Kensington Publishing Group). Whatcha got?
I haven't been to Israel since 1998 when I was there for my Baha'i Pilgrimage. I am a Baha'i of Jewish Heritage. I filled in for Rabbi Boravitz (sp) teaching Torah study while he was on tour for his book, HOLY THIEF. Go figure.
  • Rabbi Jacobs

Mr. Barer (Burl), Sorry, I'm laughing as I write this. First, I just joined today, and you're the third nice person to welcome me. Second your note is hilarious. (If I could just figure out what you're saying: "Baha'i of Jewish Heritage, who filled in for Rabbi..." Anyhow, thanks for welcoming me. Thank G-d, I've been extremely successful publishing books in Jewish law for many years, whatever I write gets bought up, and distributed by the largest Jewish publisher in the world. But, now I want to publish something mainstream, and I never had the opportunity to develop those contacts. The warden of my prison was murdered by the most famous criminal in Israel in 1980, one of his own inmates. That warden, Major Ronnie Nitzan, was a social worker, who dreamed to revamp the Israel Prison Service from drug-infested violence to rehab education and civil. The underground rose against him, spearheaded by Hertzel Avitan, (Israel's Al Capone), convicted of three murders, an inmate in Nitzan's prison. Warden Nitzan permitted Avitan to leave prison to visit his dying father, Avitan escapes, is on the lam for four months, and ambushes warden Nitzan on his way to work with twenty-two machine gun bullets, then escapes to France. Following the murder, the underground as well as the Prison Service realized had low they'd fallen. Today, the Israel Prison Service is known as a world leader in rehab and education, and it all because of the death of this one man. I know warden Nitzan's family personally: elderly parents, daughter, and widow. I all the archived material: all the newspaper articles, personal records, everything. As I say, I'm looking for collaboration. I don't know much about the Edgar Award. But it sounds impressive. What now?
  • Rabbi Jacobs

BTW, Mr. Barer, you can see all about me at: www.rabbijacobs.com . Not that I'm much to look at, but like to be transparent. Best.

Hi, I just got back after checking your website and videos and ... have never seen anything like it before. It's unbelievable and is a life we haven't known. Not even sure what to say, we're still reeling...
  • Rabbi Jacobs

    Karen,

I'm laughing out loud. Thanks for the kind words. Tell Jamie to check out all my clips, some are cool, others are just fun. I'm checking out your site, now.

Since joining this site, today, I've already met a whole bunch of great people. Thank you, so much for the welcome.

I'll check out your site, and we'll write. I was in CA last year, and my instructor, (the highest ranking women in the world (www.taeyunkim.com) tested me and awarded me an eighth degree master certificate. (I think it was more honorary than actual, and also more kind than I deserved. Anyhow, tell this to Jamie.) Best. Rabbi Jacobs

  • Michael Haskins

Rabbi, sounds like you have a lot of book material in your background. Glad to be your friend.
  • Kevin Allman

Hi, Rabbi - thanks for the invite.

I like that Superrabbi karate stance!
  • Rabbi Jacobs

Thanks for the kind words. All you folks have quite a lot going for you. Hope to network, get to know you all.

I had a choice between this karate stance, or posting a photo of me below in prison uniform. Ended up choosing this one, but figured either would catch people's attention. Best to you all.
  • Gemma Halliday

Lol! I know what you mean about hitting the reply button. It’s a happening little community here, isn't it?

I am happily married to a fantastic Jewish lady, for which you may either kiss me or kill me. And yes, a rabbi did marry us. For which you may either kiss him or kill him.
    Best,

    David

So I asked the Rabbi, "Can I have sex on Shabbas? If its work we cant do it, but if it is play, we can do it. So, is it work or play?"
The Rabbi said "It is play! You can do it all you want. If it were work, my wife would hire a shiksa to do it!"
  • Kim Howell

    Thanks Rabbi Jacobs,
Your background and work look really impressive too. I'm looking forward to reading more of your writings as they are published. I'm very honored to have you on my Friends List. :-)
  • David L. Hoof

For those with whom I've had more than a token exchange, I need to raise your awareness that recently there has been some cyberfunniness that has left friend's messages untransmitted and new friends not added. If needed, use d.hoof@att.net instead.
    Best

Thanks again Rabbi Jacobs. My grandchildren started coming about 7 years ago, so we're up to 4 happy little ones now, and cherish every moment we spend with them. Three are boys and one tiny girl that's 3 1/2 right now. We were always warned that children grow up too fast, but the rate grandchildren grow seems by far to be way more than their parents.

The Hostbyk is a spin off actually, of my Designbyk site. I had such a hard time trying to find space to place both my own sites and my clients sites for several years, until one day when a friend suggested I open my own Hosting company. From the week I opened it around 8 years ago, it's been able to carry it's own weight and generated many clients that have several sites hosted with me now. It started as part of the design site, but proved early on that it was a business of worthy of it's own name.

I enjoy every moment in all areas of my business, and am fortunate that it allows me the time to be with my grandchildren, without having to worry about punching a time clock.
  • Rabbi Jacobs

You've got a lot to be thankful for, thank G-d. I'm happy to hear about people enjoying their grandchildren, it's heartwarming.

The designbyk site is very tight. I like tight. Everything downloads quickly. You can see you put a lot into it.

    I'll keep it in mind.

Thanks for writing. Enjoy the family. (I'm actually writing from Israel, where I live. The books and stuff is in America.) Best for now.

How is life in Israel going? Have you lived there long now? I've never been off US soil to date, but am hoping one day to change that. My husband would really love to see Israel, as well as read your books on Jewish religion. He's been delving into the subject for several years now, in trying to learn his true origins.

I am certain when the time comes and your grandchildren arrive, you too will find much happiness in their company. There's more pleasure in those moments together, than anything else in life I've experienced before. I dearly loved raising my own children, and spending time with the next generation has been totally awesome.

My youngest grandson is Ryan Joseph and he seems to be growing and maturing at an accelerated rate. He turned 2 on the first day of this month, but is already 3 feet and a couple inches tall. He can recite each letter of the English alphabet quite clearly, and count to twenty without skipping too many letters. He loves to snuggle close for story time, and his library collection is already needing more storage space.:-)

Why is there so much trouble in getting a street map of Tel Aviv as it was in 1952?
  • Rabbi Jacobs

I've never heard there's a problem in getting a street map of Tel Aviv from 1952. I guess there's not a tremendous amount of demand for them. If there's any way I can help, let me know.
