Profile Information:

Hometown:
Sydney, Australia
About Me:
I was born in Melbourne a while back and after a long career as a photographer and photo educator and living and working at times in the US and Asia I finally settled in Sydney. One day I decided to see if that substitute English teacher I had in my second year of high school was full of hot air when he told me I showed promise as a writer. With three novels published and two more under contract it seems like he may have been right. Better late than never I suppose. When not writing I teach at The Australian Centre for Photography and live at beautiful Bondi Beach with a beautiful woman writer/director who fearlessly edits what I write. We both enjoy travel, eating interesting food and I love to cook, which is handy as she doesn’t.

Books And Authors I Like:
I’ll pretty much read anything with words on it, especially anything on photography history, food, crime, espionage and humour. I’m also a rabid re-reader, which is handy for an author approaching a seventh or eighth draft. There are always at least a dozen books on the bedside table which might include le Carré, Deighton, Chandler, Hiaasen, Friedman (Kinky), MFK Fisher – I think my age is showing. My writers’ writer is Raymond Carver – now there’s a man to show you what can be done with a couple of hundred well chosen words.
Movies And TV Shows I Like:
Love lots of movies – top of mind are Get Carter (original), The Ipcress File, Hard Candy, Barton Fink, Fargo, Apocalypse Now, Wag the Dog, The Player, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Also, there are some really well written things showing up on the box of late. Mad Men, Boston Legal, The Riches, Deadwood, The Daily Show and Stephen Colbert are on the ‘don’t miss’ list. Also Anthony Bourdain.

    Hi Geoff,
Indonesia truly is one of my favorite places on the planet. I haven't been for about four years, it's about time I got back there. The next book in my series - out in the fall - is set in Indonesia.

    Geoff,
Thanks for the great site! It's affirmation of everything I've learned over the last six years. A little depressing, but it helps to know what one is up against and know that others face the same precipice!

Thanks for your note, Geoff. Are you coming to New York for Thrillerfest? Meredith

    Hi Geoff
Loved your author-to-author entry - obviously, seeing I was the other author.
It was great to meet you and your gorgeous partner.
Really wish I got the Didge player to take a photo of us all.
I have, however, uploaded a couple of pics from our Sydney trip onto my page - including the hijacked LNG tanker, I mean giant car carrier hanging around Fort Denison.
I really really enjoyed Sensitive New Age Spy but - while I was reading it that week in Sydney - I kept expecting at every corner we turned, to bump into Alby or some of the action that was going on in the book. Sign of a good writer when your reader gets your story confused with real life.
We will be chatting with a few of the Sisters in Crime tomorrow night about 'our' grand idea for promotion...Stay tuned.
    cheers
    Lindy

First: Are non-Aussie's allowed to post here?
Second: In response to your blog: Geoffrey definitely has a more literary ring. But Geoff doesn't scare me away. Not like Ry Cooder the accountant.

I'm a non-Aussie with quite a few publishing credits in Australia to my name. Great trailer Geoff! See mine on my page if you have a minute or two to spare

    Hi, Geoff,
I just saw your comment on LJ Sellers page--she's more or less a neighbour of mine in Eugene and we sat next to each other at the last local authors fair.

I had some help with dialogue from very kind Aussies when I wrote Gunpowder Plot, which has two Australian characters.

I very much enjoy Arthur Upfield's Boney books, but I understand Aussies have mixed feelings about them. What's your opinion?

    Hi Geoff,

I can almost see you walking through those dank, fog shrouded streets. As yousay, the Ripper stillholds a fascination for so many people around the world, mostly I think because he is stil unidentified. Glad you anjoyed the video trailer, and look forward to hearing from you again.

    Best regards

    Brian

I've been in Oregon for 14 years now, after 20 in Southern California, and I love it. Even sitting here looking out a a mixture of fog and rain, I love it. Here in Eugene we get 5 months of spring, my favourite season. We're 80 miles from miles of deserted beaches (OK, so you need a wetsuit) and 80 miles from the mountains, and in spite of the abominable clear-cutting, there's forest everywhere. We get top classical artists visiting (eg Yoyo Ma) yet it takes only ten minutes to get home from a symphony concert, 15 from a univ. concert. 20 minutes from the city centre you can buy your produce direct from the farm. I grow apples cherries blackberries blueberries raspberries strawberries rhubarb redcurrants blackcurrants, plums---well, I could go on rhapsodising forever. Next time you come to the US, visit the beautiful Northwest!
