The Maltese Falcon is written much like this, in what I was taught is called "camera eye POV." Dialog, action, and description. Nothing in anyone's head, no individual perceptions, very much like watching a movie. It takes someone with a lot of skill to keep that compelling for a couple of hundred pages, but it's very effective when done well.

Hammett, needless to say, pulls it off effortlessly.
