Profile Information

Hometown:
Melbourne
About Me:
I lived in Southeast Asia for six years in the nineties, based in Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, as well as traveling around the wider region.

During that time, I worked as a journalist, and as a communications consultant for the United Nations and a number of non-governmental organisations. I have since travelled frequently in South East Asia, living in Phnom Penh for a year in 2008, during which time I wrote the first draft of a crime novel Cambodia Darkness and Light, and worked on a European television documentary on the international tribunal into the crimes committed by the Khmer Rouge.

I am the reviews editor for the online zine Crime Factory, as well as writing the regular column, Setting Sun, about crime fiction and film in Asia. I'm also a regular contributor to Back Alley Noir, the official on-line forum of the US-based Film Noir Foundation.

My blog, Pulp Curry, focuses on crime fiction on film from Asia and Australia.

The manuscript for Cambodia Darkness and Light made the final 10 out of 534 entries in the 2009 Scribe fiction prize for writers over 35 years of age and was shortlisted in the 2010 Victorian Premier's Literary Awards in the category of 'Unpublished Manuscript by an Emerging Victorian Writer'. It is also the recipient of an Unpublished Manuscript Fellowship at Melbourne's Wheeler Centre and Readings Foundation.

My short story, Two Men and a Car appears in a soon to be released anthology, Crime Factory: The First Shift, being released in the US by New Pulp Press.

Books And Authors I Like:
My tastes are pretty broad, but I'm particularly partial to noir, hard-boiled and pulp fiction. Some of my favourite authors include James Ellroy, Ken Bruen, Megan Abbott, David Peace, Charles Willeford, James Crumley, Chester Himes, Christa Faust and Jim Thompson. I also did anything by Richard Stark/Donald Westlake.

Some of my favourites in terms of Australian fiction are Garry Disher, David Whish Wilson, Peter Corris and Malla Nunn.
Movies And TV Shows I Like:
In terms of movies, there's simply too many to go into here. Some films I've seen recently that I liked include Red Circle, Blackmail is my Life by Kinji Fukasaku, Fast Walking, and the Bank Job. I like a lot of Australian cinema but in terms of crime flicks I'm yet to be convinced that we have done anything as good as Beresford's The Money Movers in 1978.

Hi Andrew

I'm one of the editors for Noir Nation, and I would love to get some more stories from Australia for Issue 2  (Issue 1 will be available Sept 1, 2011).  Looking for short stories and graphic stories (comics).  Maybe you have some, and could also help spread the word?  We start reading for issue 2 on Oct 1.

Thank you,

Alan
