Favorite Mystery Authors: Well, one of the reasons I'm here is that I'm hoping to pick up some more writers, ones I haven't heard of, ones who don't show up at Borders. As you'll see, most of my faves are the "big names," and I'm looking to broaden my scope a bit. That said, and in no particular order: Lawrence Block (love Scudder, have never been able to get into the Burglar books), Donald Westlake (especially in his Richard Stark mode), Ed McBain (the first time I read the 87th Precinct I didn't get it. I was *really* dumb back then), Faye Kellerman (I like Jonathan too, but Faye's better for my money), Robert B. Parker (I know, I know, but I actually think he's gotten better again in the last few years), Max Allan Collins (I wish he'd do more Quarry books), Sue Grafton (haven't read the last few--I'm waiting for a good moment to reread the whole series), Andrew Vachss (nasty, nasty, nasty books), Stuart Kaminsky (quick reads, but with a strong emotional core, I think), Kinky Friedman (though I guess that's over now), John D. MacDonald ('nuff said), Rex Stout (ditto), David Handler (I'm thrilled that the early Hoags are being reissued in hardback), Dennis Lehane (GONE, BABY, GONE was stunning, though SHUTTER ISLAND was just silly), Ross MacDonald (I need to read more of these), James Crumley (like a good shot of whiskey, or twelve), James Lee Burke (I could do without the supernatural overtones), and, for something light, Gregory McDonald or Warren Murphy (sometimes ya gotta eat potato chips). Phew. As I guess this list illustrates, I gravitate toward series characters.
Movies And TV Shows I Like:
