About Me:
WHO WE ARE
We are 3400 members in 48 chapters world-wide, offering networking, advice and support to mystery authors. We are authors, readers, publishers, agents, booksellers and librarians bound by our affection for the mystery genre and our support of women who write mysteries. Sisters in Crime was founded by Sara Paretsky and a group of women at the 1986 Bouchercon in Baltimore.
Our mission statement is simply this:

"To combat discrimination against women in the mystery field, educate publishers and the general public as to inequities in the treatment of female authors, raise the level of awareness of their contributions to the field, and promote the professional advancement of women who write mysteries."

What do we offer our members?
Our newly revised guidebooks for authors: "Shameless Promotion for Brazen Hussies 2," "Breaking and Entering in the New Millenium," and "So You're Going to do an Author Signing."

InSinC, our quarterly 16-page newsletter.

Annual membership directory published in June.

Books in Print, our annual listing of books by our member authors. This publication is distributed to bookstores, libraries and readers.

An institutional presence at national and regional book events, mystery conferences and festivals with opportunities for individual author participation and/or distribution of promotional materials.

An on-going mystery review project monitoring media coverage of female and male authors.

An optional clipping service to provide SinC author members with reviews and articles.

And much, much more!
Please take a few minutes to explore the many facets of our website: www.sistersincrime.org

If you're new to Sisters in Crime and want to become part of our dynamic organization, you'll find a membership application at our website for downloading and printing.

Reach out to the camaraderie for which Sisters in Crime is famous; and keep reading, keep writing, keep recommending mysteries to everyone, everywhere.

When BSP is a bad thing

By Donna Andrews

The other day I was at an event sponsored by a writing-related organization. (Maybe it wasn't SinC. Maybe it was MWA. Or RWA. Or a local writing outfit. I'm not telling. Let's call it RISC, for Really Impressive Scribbler's Club.) Anyway, this particular RISC meeting was well attended. Most of the people there were writers--published or aspiring--along with a few avid readers and a few friends and significant others of writers. The meal was edible to tasty, the… Continue

And we said, "Let's publish an anthology!"

What better way “to promote the professional advancement of women who write mysteries,” Chesapeake Chapter thought, than to put together a short story anthology. Three anthologies and more than a few headaches later, we sometimes find ourselves wondering, was it worth it? Then someone invariably points to our six Agatha nominations (and two wins), two Anthony nods (and one win), previously unpublished contributors being considered for representation by agents, and at least two with publishing… Continue

I'm trying to write a novel here....

by Margaret Coel

Six months ago, I had a brilliant idea. Two walls of my study could be knocked out to make a bigger study. To get just how brilliant this was, try to picture my study: desk and computer, a pair of stuffed floor-to-ceiling bookcases, flowered loveseat, lamp and two filing cabinets, all jammed shoulder-to-shoulder against the walls around the closet, window and door. Piles of manuscripts, folders, magazines and other important stuff that I mean to get to someday on the… Continue

In Praise of Editors

by Nancy Martin

My latest book (Murder Melts in Your Mouth, the 7th Blackbird Sisters Mystery) was released a month ago, and we’ve been enjoying good sales. I say “we” intentionally, because no successful book could possibly be the work of one person. In my case, there’s my critique partner, my blog sisters, my readers, my family, my agent and her various colleagues, my publisher and the house staff, and last but certainly not the least--my editor.

In my twenty-eight-year… Continue

Hey and Hola to all my friends at SINC, the best writers organization in the land and on the sea. Thanks so much for adding me as a crimespace fan, and I hope some of you writing the short story and or the novel and having questions will check out my blog on Crimespace where I've just laid down 3 rules for writing the short as opposed to the long work, what makes a short a gem and a long a peal necklace? And how to create either or with success.
Also looking forward to any and all at this year's Love is Murder. Sorry, Pongo--pictured with me--won't be on hand. That dog has sold more copies of City of the Absent than I ever will.
Again many thanks for connecting me up here. I feel plugged in hook, line, and SinC-er

OK, this chapter thing was probably my problem. I once belonged to SinC and finally dropped out. But I never joined a chapter. Perhaps I should give it a second try.

Is there any way to find out how many SinC members there are in an area that has no chapter? So I can decide if it is worth trying to form a chapter in the upper lower peninsula of Michigan? Thanks.
