VR Barkowski was born and raised 90 miles north of Sacramento in a town nestled between California's Sierra Foothills and the state's great Central Valley. A graduate of UC Berkeley and recovering sociologist, she is an avid if not intrepid traveller, a lover of animals, music, museums, glass, pottery, cooking, graveyards, and books—not necessarily in that order.
Winner of the 2012 Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers Colorado Gold for Mystery and a finalist for both the 2012 Claymore and the Daphne Du Maurier Awards, VR's short fiction has appeared in Mysterical-E and Spinetingler.
A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, The Master and the Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien, A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole, Visible Spirits by Steve Yarbrough, Sacred Hunger by Barry Unsworth, Madapple by Christina Meldrum, Favorite genre reading? Psychological mystery and historical fiction. Admired authors? Way too many to list here but I adore, Carlene Thompson, Michael Chabon, Thomas H. Cook, James Lee Burke, Tobias Wolff, Dennis Lehane, Michael Connelly, Harlen Coben, Jodi Picoult, the incomparable Ruth Rendell., And three women writers relatively new to the party but all fabulous:, Gillian Flynn, Tana French and Cornelia Read - something to which to aspire.
