The Borders in Tysons Corner isn’t the busiest store in the chain, but I still had a good time at the book signing. Not only did I make some new fans but some good friends stopped by to say hi and upgrade their collections of my novels (a shout-out to Joni Jackson Langevoort, ace thriller writer Richard Gazala and his cute friend Heather.) Familiar faces always make these events even better!
Also, this month’s edition of the International Thriller Writers newsletter, the Big…

Saturday I will be signing my novels at Borders Express in Fair Oaks Mall. In addition to my autographed mysteries and thrillers you'll find the newest hardcovers, paperbacks and audio books, as well as an exceptional selection of magazines, stationery and great gift ideas. It's the perfect stop for that empty day before Independence Day. The Mall is at 11713 Lee Jackson Hwy,…

I'm one of the judges for the Shamus Awards this year and one of the submissions is Big Machine by Victor LaValle. The book seems to be an attempt to reinvent genre and pull it across the line into the land of serious literature. The novel's narrator Ricky is a janitor, an ex-junkie and a cult survivor. He’s also one of seven African Americans summoned to Vermont by a…

Recently my private life has been occupied, in part, with helping a very good friend who is a new mother make the challenging life-style changes that come along with a beautiful and perfect new daughter. Nothing you are told in advance can really prepare you for the hardest job you'll ever love. But we always feel like they should have seen it…

Borders has four different bookstores in Washington Dulles International Airport. Friday I signed books at the brand new store in Terminal B, which is bright and very open. It's also right in the traffic flow and a perfect place for an author to stand beside a giant sign provided by manager Dennis Bryant. That day I signed books that went to every corner of the country, and a couple to Germany as well.

What Mark Twain said about his father was true for me too: "When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years." By then I had also learned that a father carries pictures where his money used to…
