Pauline Rowson looks ahead to 2014

2014 promises to be another productive and interesting year. I'm not the sort of person to make New Year's Resolutions but I do like to set goals and then measure the achievement of them throughout the year.  This comes as a result of my business background in Marketing and Training where goal setting is important just as long as those goals are realistic and achievable. …

A year in the life of a crime writer, Pauline Rowson looks back over 2011

With the New Year almost upon us it's that time of year to take a look back over the events of 2011, and for me it's been a busy and productive year.

Here are some of the highlights of 2011.

January saw the launch of the second Crime Writers’ Association Young Crime Writers Competition 2011. I was the judge of the South Coast entries with the winner going forward for the National prize which was announced during National Crime Writing Week 13 - 19 June. …

Three more appearances in 2010 and then it's looking ahead to 2011

I've got three more appearances and talks to come before the year draws to a close. On 27 November I will be at Waterstones in Portsmouth (UK) between 12 noon and 2pm signing copies of my crime novels or just chatting to readers and anyone else who happens to pass by and is foolish enough to give me eye contact!

Then on 15 December I will be travelling to Broad Chalke in Salisbury to give a talk to the Women’s Institute, which is followed by a trip across the Solent to the Isle of… Continue

Jerusalem reading Nov. 16

I'll be talking about my Palestinian crime novels in Jerusalem on Monday, Nov. 16 at 10 a.m. The location is Beit Frankforter, 80 Bethlehem Road, in Baka. So call in sick (if you still have a job) and come along.

“ME” doesn’t stand for Middle East

One of the advantages of being an author in an “exotic” locale is that people visit and want to hear from you as someone who knows the place well. It’s also one of the disadvantages.

Last Friday night, I drove out to Ein Kerem to meet one such group of visitors from Reboot, a U.S. organization that brings together mostly liberal – and certainly not conventional-thinking – Jews to discuss issues related to Judaism and Israel. It turned out to be… Continue

Neon pee on the Reeperbahn, and other travels

The whole point of travel is to see Red Light districts around the world. That’s what I assume my German publisher C.H. Beck thinks. Or maybe that's what they think I'll like. Anyway, they keep sending me to Hamburg, which has one of the most famous naughty neighborhoods in the world.

At the invitation of the extremely professional Harbour Front… Continue

The most obscure band in Jerusalem

I bet you didn't know there was an underground scene in Jerusalem (at least not an underground music scene; you've probably heard of some other undergrounds that operate here). Here's a little bit of Middle East insider poop for you: what's the most obscure underground band in Jerusalem?

Answer: Dolly Weinstein.

A fivesome (formerly a sixsome, sometimes foursome) of folk rock and rock standards, featuring yours truly on bass.

Other writers are notable for… Continue

Continue

Folk Fest

I'm booked at a semi-local festival this weekend, one dedicated to, of all things, the Morel Mushroom. The weather is supposed to be non-cooperative, as usual. If it's outside and I'm signed up, Mother Nature is almost guaranteed to rain, sleet, or do a great imitation of Hemingway's three day blow. I practiced putting up my handy-dandy canopy by myself, since my "chauffeur" is fishing in Canada. Should be great.

It's often a little like Seger's descriptions of being on the road:… Continue
