The Limits of Teasing Readers

Okay, Author, you've got a big secret in your book, something that happened to the main character in the past that has a bearing on how he/she acts today. Here are Peg's rules for dealing with it:

First, refer to it sparingly. I get tired of being reminded that there's something you know that I don't.

Second, make the clues progressive, so I have a chance of figuring it out, at least partly, before the end.

Third, the secret had better be good enough when I get there to…

Self-Publishing: Book Samples and Formatting - Does It Really Matter?

This topic is a little off the beaten path of self-publishing, but it does tie in, and I'll tell you why.

As indie writers, we're in the business of selling books (among other things). So, I took a poll, and these were my questions:

1. Do you sample before you buy a book?

2. If yes, what are you looking for and what turns you off or makes you decide not to purchase?

3. Does formatting matter, mistakes, errors, etc. and if so, how much?

4. How much of a…

Self-Publishing: Promoting Yourself - Part Four

There are many outlets both in print and in person where you can be seen and heard.

MAGAZINES

In print, consider submitting short stories to different magazines. Every reader of your article is a possible buyer for your book. For one stop shopping in this area, become a member of Writer's Market. On their site, they list magazines alphabetically that you can submit to.

One other place you can register is at… Continue

Self-Publishing: Promoting Yourself - Part Two

As you prepare for your book to come out, a great thing you can do in advance is to get together a press release, and there are a few sites that will send them out for you for FREE.

The only downside I had with the ones I have sent out is that I wanted to put my contact info as misspoirotatymail.com instead of using the @ sign. Why does this matter? Once that release goes out a bunch of spammers will flood your inbox with a bunch of stuff you don't want or need. Fortunately, they…

SOMETIMES IT PAYS TO JUST SURF THE WEB

ARTICLE LINK: http://exm.nr/bloc-LA

Sometimes it pays to do generic searches. I wasn’t aware of Writers Bloc, but when it came up in a search for Los Angeles Writers I liked it enough to Spotlight it. Check out this interesting non-profit organization and some of the upcoming programs.

K IS FOR "KEEP WRITING" - WRITERS TRICKS OF THE TRADE

LINK TO TODAY'S COLUMN - http://exm.nr/KforKeepWriting

As writers, we all say that we will keep writing. Oh yeah, write every day. Some of us do and some of us don't. I decided this would make a great topic for my column today in the Las Vegas edition of Examiner.com. Those of you…

E-readers, Kindle, and Nook--Oh, My!

I belong to several on-line chat groups for authors (probably too many). The gist of what's going on is that authors are catching on to the e-book revolution, some reluctantly, some anxiously, some willingly. It's scary, because a lot of things change with e-books.

For example: you don't need an agent to publish an e-book. You don't even need a publisher, if you're willing to do some homework. There isn't that assurance that some of us need that we've got professionals behind us. Then… Continue

While surfing the web I discovered a book called “How to have an affair and not get caught.” What could be more perfect for a Spotlight commentary from Las Vegas on 1-11-11. After all, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.” I tried to post it at 11:11pm but wasn’t finished in time.

Researching the crime novel and the importance of location

I've just uploaded a new video interview. In this short video I am in conversation with Tony Smith, talking about my marine mystery police procedural crime novels featuring the flawed and rugged Inspector Andy Horton and my thrillers. How I research them and I'm also talking about the importance of their location, which is Portsmouth…
