Nearly finished the first draft of the next DI Horton crime novel, number 8 in the series, number 7 out early next year

I've now written 70,000 words of the next DI Andy Horton marine mystery crime novel which will be number eight in the series.  Number seven, A Killing Coast, is scheduled for publication in hardcover early in 2012. As soon as I have the jacket image and more information on the publication details of A Killing…

Self-Publishing: Book Samples and Formatting - Does It Really Matter?

This topic is a little off the beaten path of self-publishing, but it does tie in, and I'll tell you why.

As indie writers, we're in the business of selling books (among other things). So, I took a poll, and these were my questions:

1. Do you sample before you buy a book?

2. If yes, what are you looking for and what turns you off or makes you decide not to purchase?

3. Does formatting matter, mistakes, errors, etc. and if so, how much?

4. How much of a…

Self-Publishing: Promoting Yourself - Part 3

A big part of self-publishing is getting out there and becoming involved, and there are so many ways to do that, but I wanted to list several sites that allow you to interact and get to know your readers. I've already covered some of the sites you should sign up with, but I wanted to focus on writer forums.

If you have an eBook on Amazon Kindle or Barnes & Noble Nook, and chances are you do - you really should pop into their boards and take part. I will say that I see the same… Continue

Heartless, Greedy, Bastards!!!

It's sometimes a little daunting seeing nothing but 5-Star reviews being posted for one of your noir novels. And believe me, that ain't no boast because I've gotten my share of "you suck(s)" during my time as an author.

But these recent reviews for THE INNOCENT are sweeter than normal since they're for a re-released novel that used to be called…

Vincent Zandri: Sponsored by Budwesier

Lately there's been talk amongst publishers, agents, and authors alike that E-Books might one day be offered to the public for free (ok, I know this is happening now, but I mean ALL E-Books). Instead of the reader paying the author/publisher, sponsors will pay in exchange for product placement inside the text. Since the books are read via electronic reader, readers will be able to link to specific product websites, and even to that author's own books should the opportunity present…

E-readers, Kindle, and Nook--Oh, My!

I belong to several on-line chat groups for authors (probably too many). The gist of what's going on is that authors are catching on to the e-book revolution, some reluctantly, some anxiously, some willingly. It's scary, because a lot of things change with e-books.

For example: you don't need an agent to publish an e-book. You don't even need a publisher, if you're willing to do some homework. There isn't that assurance that some of us need that we've got professionals behind us. Then… Continue

Kindles offer Endless Possibilties for Authors/Readers/Publishers

Remember the days when you'd sign a major contract, get a big ass check in the mail, and just spend a year or so partying like a rock star in New York or Los Angeles or Lincoln, Nebraska for that matter? There was nothing else to do because after all, your book probably wouldn't be hitting the shelves until at least a year from contract execution.

I remember my original editor for…
